About this chalet rental
This exquisite 3 bed ski/walking chalet is in Wengen in one of the most outstanding areas of Switzerland. The Eiger, Jungfrau and Monch mountains provide an breathtaking backdrop to some spectacular ski and walking trails. The highest railway station in Europe is only a short train ride away with glacier walks and views that will blow your mind! The chalet has a wrap around balcony with sweeping views of the Lauterbrunnen valley from the Jungfrau to Interlaken.
The Journey to car free bliss
Park in Lauterbrunnen and take the small cog railway to the village of Wengen where you will find the chalet a 8 minute walk away in a quiet little area with epic views.
The Space
The chalet has every amenity for a truly magical mountain experience from the fondue and raclette to the balcony seating that offers you an unrivalled view of the mountains and valley that make this area of Switzerland so special. It is a home from home and has everything you would need to dine in including spices, oils, tea, coffee - everything that you don't want to have to buy and then leave!
The chalet featured in Homes and Interiors Scotland Magazine Nov/Dec 2017 edition and was described as " A cosy, stylish escape with plenty of rustic charm".
The Area
Ski Season
The busiest time on the resort is when the World Cup Downhill event takes place mid January, it is one of the classic races in the skiing calendar and is a really big deal. Around 40,000 people descend on the village and it takes on a carnival atmosphere for 3 days - it is nothing short of crazy!
For the rest of the winter season the area has a much more sophisticated relaxed vibe and you sometimes feel that you are the only person on the slope, even in the kids school week! The village is really small with a bakers, cheese shop, restaurants, bars and two awesome interiors shops.
The resort is a bit of a well kept secret, I am sure the Swiss want to keep it for themselves, however those that do find there way there end up never going anywhere else - the beauty of it gets under your skin and keeps you coming back.
Spring and Autumn
In the spring and autumn this really is a special place as the village is quiet and you feel like you have the lower mountain walks to yourself. There are a few restaurants that open all year round and the quality of the food is superb. Our favourites offers local game dishes during the autumn served with roasted chestnuts, red cabbage and spatzeli, a local dish that is awesome! If you want to cook in there is a Coop supermarket and local shop in the village that can cater to most culinary needs. There is also a local bakers and most importantly a cheese shop where you can get in touch with your alpine self with all the mountain delicacies! There is a lovely walk from the chalet down to the valley floor where you can pick up a trail that takes you all the way up the valley to the cable car that takes you up to Murren - a must if you are exploring the area!
Summer
Wengen is an all year round resort and in the summer the walking is sublime. You can walk straight from the door of the chalet where you will be in the heart of the most beautiful scenery anywhere on earth (OK I am biased) The Jungfraujoch, the highest mountain railway in Europe, is accessed from the station which is a 7 minute walk away. Package tourism started right here when a certain Mr Thomas Cook brought the first guests to Wengen in 1863. In that group there was a young lady by the name of Gemima Morrell who kept a diary of the adventure and has now become very famous with tours named after her. During a telephone conversation with my Fathers’ s cousin, Margaret Morrell, it transpired that I was distantly related to Gemima! She was blown away by the scenery in this area and it is easy to see why when you visit this very special region.

We loved this chalet! It was clean and equipped with everything we needed for a family vacation in Wengen. We loved having a washer and dryer as we were traveling with 3 children. The views were breathtaking. It was a wonderful adventure to learn what it is like to live in the alpine area with no car access. The town had everything we needed. We learned quickly to allow time for walking up or down hills if we wanted to go anywhere. We enjoyed walking from Wengen to Lauterbrunen and returning by train. We found the nearby Coop grocery store to be friendly and had everything we needed. The bakery was a favorite place to get breakfasts. Our main challenge was at our arrival. The directions given were not accurate. It was raining when we arrived and we had quite a time finding the chalet (with luggage in hand, walking in the rain). I would suggest the host update the directions by using the following information: Park at Lauterbrunen train station. Take train to Wengen. When stepping off the train, walk past the town center and turn right. Pass the Coop store on your left as you walk down under the bridge. Stay on the path, round the curve to the right, passing a restaurant hotel on the left. Continue on path and turn left to go towards Chalet Isabelle. Continue on path and pass Chalet Distel and Chalet Anemone on the right. Destination Chalet Sulegg is on the the right. Climb stairs to the entrance.

This place was awesome! The views are amazing and the chalet accommodates nicely. There’s also a great neighborhood kitty cat that loves to hang out on the deck with you. We really enjoyed everything about this place….keep in mind it it very steep terrain so if you have mobility issues that could pose a problem but they do have taxis. We wouid stay here again if we ever comeback to Switzerland.

Mountain View was great! Don’t try to walk uphill or downhill with luggage-take a taxi instead. I was surprised by the number of vehicles in a town that claims to be car free. Host never responded to our outreach. Glad we didn’t have issues because I am not confident we would have received a response.

We had been staying in Lauterbrunnen, since that’s what came up after many weeks of Google searches about best towns to stay. All of Switzerland is gorgeous so I can’t really complain about one town versus another but wow, were my searches off. Maybe I didn’t know how to research, but Wengen is by far one of the most amazing places we’ve ever been. Close to the Lauterbrunnen waterfalls, incredible hikes, breathtaking views, skiing…The host is absolutely wonderful, the chalet is beautiful, clean, with great coffee and an amazing coffee machine for the coffee lovers, morning coffee with views…perfectly located. My kids were excited to walk to the grocery store by themselves in the morning and nobody wanted to leave. Host was super accommodating when we wanted to stay extra. Oh, and the cat! We absolutely loved the cat, he came to visit every evening and brought a friend on the third day. My heart stayed in that place. I cannot say enough good things about the town, the host, and the chalet. Best spring break ever!
