**34 Coney Street - a brand new holiday let development of the highest quality right in the city centre**
Coney Street, York's premier shopping street was home to some colourful characters down the ages. In 1150, the main street in York, was called Cuningstrete, the King's Street. It ran from Ousegate right to the Museum Gardens. By the 18th century it was the site of the seat of government in the city, with the Guildhall and the Mansion House in pride of place. But it was in the 19th century that it became a shopping centre par excellence, with high class fashion establishments, costumiers, furriers, milliners, linen drapers, pianoforte warehouse, bookshops and jewellers, as well as the home of York's first department store, Leak and Thorp which opened in 1869.
The Viking Suite
This luxury suite placed at the top of the building has a fabulous view of the York Minster. Part of the roof of the building has been replaced with glass, enabling you to sit in your own private hideaway with views that will keep you entertained for hours. Throughout the apartment there are subtle nods to the ancient Viking settlers of York, amongst which is the striking tribal style patterned wallpaper, inspired by Viking carvings. Furniture and fabrics have been chosen to reflect the colours within nature and the outdoors, ensuring high quality fabric and beautiful textures.
There is a lounge complete with Smart TV, comfortable seating and hand crafted furniture. Further in and you enter a fabulous glassed area with a bar area and seating so that you can admire the world renowned York Minster. There is a sumptuous double bedroom for resting after a fun day out in York or a fabulous evenings entertainment. Complimented by a luxury shower room where you can take your time getting ready to go out into York, which sits only a step away from the front door. The pros: The location and views of the hotel was amazing. We kept laughing at the fact that it seemed that everything we ended up going was literally 5 minutes away.
The basics were also just right, the shower was amazing and the bed leant it self to a very restful sleep.
The cons: The cleanliness/cleaning of the room was disappointing. Dust seemed to be everywhere. There was mold growing on the second floor stairs. The bed had some previous tenants vape laying under the bed on my final inspection to see if anything was left. And to top it all of the towels. Now maybe I'm just being overly demanding, but from the handbook, the towels were only set to be changed if I was staying longer than 12 days. Although we just managed to deal with the towel situation for the 3 nights that we did stay, that made me cringe when laying under the fur throws that were in the room, as I doubt the cleaning schedule of those sheets between guests...
The facility seemed incomplete. The air-conditioning ( I actually believe that it was underfloor heating) was confusing to understand and ended up turning the room into a drafty fridge, or a sauna with no inbetween. The lamps in the bedroom didn't work, with one of them missing a lightbulb, and the other one would only blink to life for a second before fading back into darkness. And finally, the bedroom seemed to be missing a door. Although not critical, it did leave us a little cautious and worried when in the bed, as the view was pretty much a straight line to the windows of the building adjacent to the hotel.
Overall, the experience and the price didn't quite line up as a whole, and I can't say that we'd be visiting Coney Street anytime soon.

The location alone is worth paying for - although there can be some noise from the streets in the evening it's worth it to be right in the heart of the city.
We were in the Viking Suite and generally the room is amazing. The door to the bathroom needs the handle looking at as is quite hard to open from the inside, especially if you have damp hands, but other than this all good

Disgusting drain smell from shower room. Cobwebs in bedroom. Steep stairs.
