I liked the price and the location
The room was not at all as it appeared on the pictures, with its own kitchenette etc. The windows can’t be opened so the room was unbearably hot and stuffy. The bed was dreadful - so uncomfortable - I couldn’t sleep.
9.0 / 10.0
The fact the staff were so friendly and helpful most places are not like that
Just the bed not 100% comfortable but was sleepable
8.0 / 10.0
The accommodation was basic, but it was very clean with a comfortable bed and a very good en-suite.
The location is excellent if you don't require parking, and is only minutes walk from the heart of the city centre.
The staff were friendly and very helpful when I asked to deposit a small piece of luggage before my official check-in time.
The old fire station yard was a bonus, with the clock tower and some of the original fire station doors still in place.
The room was somewhat spartan, with no frills like a TV, but you can see that it is perfect for its regular use as student accommodation in term time, when furnished by the resident.

We had the 2-bed apartment for me and daughter which was spacious, albeit wasted space in the corridor/hall; designed for two, there was two of everything - two dining chairs, two lounge chairs, two sets of kitchen utensils, crockery etc; much comment in the reviews that it was "student accommodation" but that was almost a benefit as it was designed for living in for weeks at a time meaning it was equipped accordingly. Hot weather for our weeklong stay so windows were open other than when security was wise. Nice size bedrooms, with writing desk/dressing table, suitable clothes storage, hangers, electrical sockets well-placed, good size shower/bathrooms, petite but adequate kitchen, decent size diner/lounge. We were in Brum to work so were only in the apartment in the morning and after late at night so suited us brilliantly. Staff were excellent.
Unfortunately the admin is atrocious so our apartment was not allocated correctly; knackered following a long day 2.5hrs drive + 5.5hrs working - they had prepared another room (poss a Twin Room?) meaning an hour wait for our apartment (Reception needed my hard copy to check it)We went to dinner in sweaty workwear. The initial correspondence was curt/officious demanding "govt approved photo ID", (lucky I had anything); the demand was for each occupant's - I had to upload both or none so gave up, only to receive another "friendly reminder" within 3hrs, omitting the para stating to do so before 48hrs of arrival or we could be "refused". Fortunately my daughter returned in time, which then had a completely different process so was done in minutes; I am uncomfortable applying my true ID online so only do so for 'legal' requirements - I just hope they have more secure servers than M&S. The hob had a safety feature so lost a couple of days use until someone in the know explained it. There are no net curtains so the blinds were necessary and the windows had no means of securing ajar which was a shame considering the heatwave. The lounge chairs were quickly uncomfortable and the bedding was nylon/foam pillows so was a sweat pit most mornings & the coat rack was obscured by the 'wardrobe'. An email the ultimate night stated check-out was 11 but an email the following morning stated 10! But, hey, we've been, we did what we needed and I would still recommend despite this sounding like a rant... just as much as I'd recommend the management investigate their processes and perhaps reword their correspondence to reflect their actual friendliness.

The access key control system was fantastic
The user of the general kitchen do not usually keep it clean after usage.

Nothing
The 2 bedroom apartment that I had booked did not exist. I was with my son. We got offered an unsuitable room with a single bed. There was no alternative with 2 beds. We declined, it was completely unsuitable & different to what I’d booked. We had to try to find alternative accommodation. I am still trying to get a refund. Booking.com have been useless. I am attempting to get a refund through my bank, as it’s clearly a fraudulent transaction….selling us an apartment that didn’t exist.

I liked that the location was so accessible to both the city centre and some local bus routes to Aston Villa FC's grounds, which is where a concert I was attending was being held. I also liked that there were shops like Tesco's and Greggs right outside the venue as well as an ample selection of linen/bedding and cultery left in the room for me to use, if I chose. I was happy with the facilities, though I didn't use the communal kitchen myself, and note that I didn't actually see another person - other than staff - during my stay.
On the first night I was awoken by a gent who seemed quite distressed and was whining in the courtyard. I tried to speak to the staff about this the next day and they didn't seem to take my point on board and just said that he had been identified and removed, though it heavily disturbed my sleep pattern. Having said that, for the money paid and due to the location I really couldn't complain. It was a lot better than expected. I was a little bit put out by the fact that a chefs knife was left, fully packaged, amongst the items left in the room to use. Whilst I understand, this item was a very dangerous weapon in the wrong hands and it made me uneasy thinking it was there.

This is just a proper home from home.
It's clean, spacious and right in the heart of Birmingham.
I loved the kitchen so you are able to make hot drinks and food.
The towels were lovely and fluffy and the shower nice and hot always.
As for the staff they could not have been more helpful. A big shout-out goes to Rosina, she showed me round the fire station I was always in awe of as a kid. Bravo everyone!
The pre communication. Quite honestly terrible.
I booked the room and just prior to arriving I got an email saying this is for students only. This floored me as when I booked it I had to fill in and copy my driving licence and it is quite clear I am a senior.
So I cancelled with a free cancellation button and was then told I would be charged almost half of my booking fee.
I contacted Booking.com and they told me to contact the property directly.
Eventually they confirmed after May 12th it is for non students also until September. So I had to rebook to get a refund but they didn't have the same dates available. So I had to do some work around.
Please fix this! I cannot tell you the stress it put me through prior to my emigration. With some proper communication it was all avoidable.
That's said I will be returning next year as it's a cracking place to stay.

hotel location
I guess the room was not cleaned right before my check-in, I found hair in the shower and in the bed, so i assume that the sheets were not changed. what's worst is that I saw mold on one of the pillows (that was very disgusting). and to finish, the basins was completely clogged. that's how I ended up having the worst stay in my life :)

Friendly reception
Not clear on listing that this is a student property. Later received an email that you need a student card to stay so I booked elsewhere. But was told that could stay and Canvas wouldn’t cancel booking.
Bed uncomfortable, very small shower. I guess that is student accommodation. The cords for the blinds were very difficult to reach.
I feel that the listing misrepresents the accommodation especially not mentioning that it is student accommodation.
Reception staff were very friendly and helpful. The problem is with the marketing trying to oversell

Clean and furnished well. Friendly staff. Overall a great stay!

I had a very good experience staying at the Old fire station, the staff was extremely helpful and they had provided me with everything one could ask for including bed covers and duvet, toiletries, pots and pans as well as washing liquids.
Extremely satisfied with the overall stay, just one thing that could have been improved was the infrastructure of the room and the ventilation system of the room that's about it.

Facilities and helpful staff
The kitchen I shared was really mess
10.0 / 10.0
Clean room, new bedding, generous selection of new utensils provided, facilities open 24hrs, super friendly staff, loved the ability to accommodate my diet and cook healthy foods in the communal kitchen. Tesco is opposite and 2 restaurants that are open very late into the night are located downstairs. Excellent connection to the rest of the city by bus. oh and the AC was strong enough to keep my room very cool despite the high summer temperatures outside. Price was great too. I particularly liked the in-house reading room which was a selling point for me.
Shared kitchen hygiene, but I guess they can't clean dishes for students so I can't blame them

Lots of little touches e.g. Supplying a saucepan and set of plates and cutlery in the room. Also wasn't expecting shampoo and shower gel to be available to use. Convenient location. Building has character and has retained fire station doors etc from the original fire station.
Communication wasn’t great. I sent messages prior to arrival and these questions were not acknowledged or responded too. It was hard to check in as reception was card access only with no doorbell, you have to rely on being let in by someone with a key. I was placed in an ensuite room on the top (5th) floor of the bandstand building. There were lifts but the button on the 5th floor was temperamental. Rooms on floors 1-4 have windows that open. Rooms on floor 5 do NOT have opening windows; it was so physically uncomfortably hot I got max 2-3 hours sleep each night. The only way I could control the temperature was to leave the blinds closed. My room was a minimum of 25*c, may have been higher. The heater was on when I arrived in July! The room was extremely stuffy and had inadequate ventilation. I had to resort to spending as little time there as possible and using frozen water bottles as ice bottles to be able to get some sleep. Ended up drinking 3-4 litres of water each night because of dehydration. Some issues with water pressure. Student halls so fridges and kitchen sinks were really dirty e.g. Dehydrated grapes (raisins) in the fridge. Sink full of dirty dishes. Fire alarm went off repeatedly around 1am on third night. Not surprising given the kitchens also had no opening windows. Mattress was very worn and needs replacing. If you are assigned a room on a lower floor with opening windows your stay may be more enjoyable.
