River Oak has abundance of walks and cycle routes straight from your doorstep, there is much to do for the outdoor enthusiast. Situated just 4½ miles from the quaint market town of Thirsk, with its 15th-century church, original cinema, and renowned racecourse. The cobbled market square hosts a twice weekly market and is surrounded by individual shops, traditional inns and tea rooms. Alf Wight, the well-known vet and author of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ lived here and the ‘World of James Herriot’ visitor centre gives a fascinating insight into the working life of this famous vet.
River Oak provides a perfect base from which to explore the wider area too, with the Yorkshire Dales National Park to the west and the North York Moors to the east. Places of interest include Sutton Bank, the beautiful cathedral city of Ripon, Castle Howard, Fountains Abbey and Aysgarth Falls. Families enjoy hours of fun at Lightwater Valley, the Forbidden Corner and Flamingo Land which are all within easy reach by car. The coastal resorts of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey are all easily accessible and regular trains run from Thirsk to the ancient walled city of York. If you didn’t want to venture from the area there is a perfect 18th-century pub within walking distance from the property, serving fresh, locally sourced homecooked meals and a variety of local ales.
