We had three nights at Matfen Hall in a lovely room overlooking the golf courses. The food in both the Cloisters and Emerald restaurants was exceptional and the staff were attentive and friendly (though it was clear that some younger members were about as familiar with their surroundings as we were). The hall is a majestic setting and the location perfect for seeing the very best of Northumberland. My only gripe is that we paid to stay in a Spa hotel with a pool (as illustrated on the website), but arrived to discover that the spa had been closed the previous week and the replacement (currently a building site) wouldn't open until September. Under the circumstances, some sort of offer of recompense, or perhaps a room upgrade, would have been appropriate, but when I mentioned it at reception all I got in reply was 'You should have had an email' (I hadn't), which was disappointing.
