Lovely location excellent food.

An old drovers inn with plenty of character. The staff were very welcoming and attentive throughout our stay. The quality of food for the Valentines special was exceptional.

The en suite bathroom in room 4 was tatty and needs refurbishing.

Run down and dirty

It is stunning from the outside and a beautiful location .

As soon as you walk in you can see how run down it is. Thread bare carpets and mouldy. The room clearly had not been decorated for decades. The room smelt dirty and everything was just old. The towels were dirty.

Wonderful stay

-The staff were so friendly and welcoming, they couldn't do enough for you. -The building is beaut and very warm and comfortable. -The food was incredible, we had dinner and breakfast and it could not be faulted. -Very warm welcome from Horace! -Very accommodating with room-changes -Location is perfect for where we were visiting and really stunning, very peaceful and rural -Bed was comfortable and there was loads of storage and seating -Giant shower and bathroom makes a nice change from many hotels -Just impeccable vibes, really

A wonderful, warm experience.

The Rhydspence is 'old school' charming... full of character and history and tradition. The staff were really warm and welcoming, the bar had a beautiful log fire burning, and a there was a wonderfully friendly atmosphere. Super comfortable bed and an amazing breakfast. We didn't have dinner this time, but on a previous visit we enjoyed an exceptional meal, high quality food, beautifully cooked and presented. We will return!

Pleasant for one or two nights but limited walk to attractions and beware of the additional charges.

Friendly staff in a building of character.

We were unhappy by the additional hidden charges. The restaurant menus did not show any additional gratuity charges. They were only made visible when presented on the bill. What was even more irritating was when bar charges were paid for in the bar they did not include them, but when bar pre-meal drinks were added to the restaurant bill they also included the gratuity charge. Staff should be given adequate wages without having to rely on gratuities.

Wonderful historic building

I chose this hotel given that it is built in the 14th century. It is a wonderful building, and the staff were extremely warm and welcoming. He had drinks at the pub on our arrival, but we did not have dinner at the restaurant given. We did not have a booking and it was completely booked up at evening. We did have a wonderful breakfast in addition.

We loved the quirkiness of this place combined with the history. The owners are so welcoming and accommodating. The location is brilliant for exploring the English/Welsh border towns and villages and ideally located for Hay on Wye. The gardens are beautiful, natural and buzzing with life.

Weekend away

The Rhydspence is in a lovely location, near the river Wye, and 4 miles from Hay-on-Wye. The town is lovely with lots of lovely shops and cafes. There is also a castle in town. There are lots of walks around the area.

The service provided by the staff in the hotel was excellent. Nothing was too much. The breakfast was cooked to order so it always came hot. The food served in the restaurant was fabulous 👌 The bed was large and comfortable. The locals in the bar are friendly and welcoming. We would come back and highly recommend this place to others.

Great stay, great food

The efficiency and friendliness of the staff could not be beaten. Large selection of good wines and beer was a bonus plus the food from perhaps a limited menu was exceptional with outstanding sauces.

Comfy stay in a mediaeval building on the England-Wales border.

Lovely quirky hotel & restaurant. Mediaeval building from the 14th century. So its a bit uneven and creaky but very comfortable. Its age means facilities are limited - no lift for example. But character makes up for that. Swifts circle the gardens and nest in the eaves, as do swallows. Great rural location yet easy to find. The restaurant is excellent by the way.

Characterful building and friendly, helpful staff. Plentiful parking and conveniently located for Hay on Wye. Nice touch to have local Farmers' products/washes in the bathroom. Fabulous coffee served with a tasty, varied breakfast.

Relaxing stay in a nice location

The staff were very accommodating, polite friendly and efficient, especially as we required gluten free options which they went out of their way to help with. They also welcomed our dog without restriction which enhanced our stay.
