The Indian meal in the evening is my best experience every time.

Loved the spacious room, independent heating controls, food delicious and plenty of it with staff who could not do enough for you. Restaurant was lovely too.
Room was not "serviced" on the second day which wasn't evident until my return but was ok. Upon checkout there was nowhere to leave keys and didn't receive an invoice that I requested but these are all small things of which I know about next time and hasn't put me off staying there again.

Came to Romsey to see "Light Up Trail" which is 10 mins walk or 2 min drive from the pub. We stayed overnight at Dog & Crook and we had a lovely time. Comfy, super clean room, parking on site. The pub itself is a fusion of a traditional local pub and a great Indian restaurant. The food was delicious, the best Indian food we've had in a long long time! The owner/host was fantastic, took his time to show us his great white wine selection, so we could have a perfect evening drink, well appreciated, thank you! Big THANK YOU to a lovely gentleman who prepared a breakfast for us at 8:30am, many many thanks! Great experience!
Shower too hot, unable to control the temperature.

Our breakfast was nicely cooked and presented but it would have been nice to have a small selection for instance croissant and or cereal.
There was no choice

We loved our stay and the staff were very friendly and bubbly. The food was excellent and we had a very comfy and good nights sleep. We will definitely be back next year for our family's Lightup Trail. I thoroughly recommend this hotel as i think it's also in a very lovely location.

Lovely room, comfy bed, beautiful decor. Reasonable size. Modern and clean. Nice ensuite bathroom.
Outside stairs to reach first floor rooms could be slippery when wet.
No air conditioning.
Fan was wonky and alarmingly oscillating so we had to switch it off.
Hot water was scolding hot and couldn't be turned down which made showering tricky. Good job I didn't need to wash my hair. Weather very hot, so a cool shower would have been useful.
Breakfast requests were ignored so the vegetarian was not offered a good breakfast, no vegetarian sausage only beans, egg and toast so very expensive for what was on offer. I am lactose intolerant and again, this wasn't catered for despite when booking in they had assured us they would have soya milk by the morning. They didn't. No vegan spread for toast either. 😒

Location was good
Breakfast - no availability of cereal, yogurt or fresh fruit. The only option was a cooked breakfast - take it or leave it - and not very well cooked. We went elsewhere for breakfast the second morning. Rear garden behind the accommodation block was scruffy with abandoned umbrellas, platic chairs and pallets. Booked dinner for 8 - on arrival at booked time, no table! They pulled a couple of tables together, but they were different heights! For both meals it appeared that everything had to be asked for, including cutlery! Staff didn't appear very confident. Shame.

Location nice and close to the retirement party in Romsey we went to
We had a bit of trouble with the shower in the morning, it was boiling hot and hard to turn the tap mechanism

Staff were extremely friendly upon arrival and, although we checked in late in the evening, there was even the offer from the kitchen to opn it back up so that they could feed us. The room had a ceiling fan which was needed as it was a very warm weekend.
One of the bedside lamps was a little tired and missing a bulb. It was a little difficult to fill the kettle as it didn't fit under the tap so we improvised by filling a glass with water instead - perhaps a small jug would be useful.

The staff were very courteous and willing to help, but they had not seen the change of date request (sent a week earlier)
So it was a booking mess.
The staff were powerless to change the booking when we arrived a day early. Booking.com wouldn't cancel the next nights stay. So we never stayed and everyone lost out, except booking.com.
Its the first time a change of date hasn't been responded to by a venue for me.

The Dog & Crook offers 5 modern bedrooms in a detached two story building adjacent to the pub. The bedrooms are of a good standard even running to a ceiling fan that was much appreciated in the recent hot spell. The pub restaurant offers a selection of pub meals as well as a reasonable choice of Indian cuisine. Service was always obliging and personable. Breakfast was available and given a choice of items you would normally find on a full English together with tea, coffee, toast and juice. Both the room rate and food and drink prices were very competitive for the area.

Clean tidy rooms, staff very pleasant
Price a little high for what it was but the breakfast certainly over priced at £12.99
No fruit cereal etc no menu to choose from only full English or bits from that. No accommodation for allergies, no gluten free bread etc. Rather poor

The location was good but room very basic and needed upgrading.Had a ceiling fan which was not efficient so really warm,it also spread small amounts of black particles all over the bed.The wardrobe was a short pole and no coat hangers. The shower was so hot couldn't use it.
All of the above.

Ideal location for a night during a rural weekend in England, a short drive to a number of locations in the area. The staff was welcoming and helpful, the pub was nice and the room was perfectly clean.
Nothing was particularly bad, but one are of improvement might be to have a travel-size soap-bar in the room. Of course no since-use plastics, just a soap wrapped in paper.

Better hospitality tray.

It was a clean average room. The breakfast was English with no variation (so I was told). There was no cereal or juices.
The noisy couple in the same building that rowed all night.

Location, staff & food were excellent
Stairs and guest above very loud. Towels, bed not changed for 3 nights I stayed there. Maybe change every other day?? Beer garden is right outside your room so very little privacy ( basically close curtains if your a downstairs room or when on your bed people can actually see you.

Situated within easy reach of Southampton and the New Forest Attractions, this venue represents excellent value for money in my opinion. I have rated it as an 8/10 for the following reasons.
The bedrooms are in a recently built annexe, and my room was on the first floor. Access is by outside metal staircases, which were a little challenging for me due to mobility issues. Fortunately it was dry and the stairs were not slippery on this occasion. There are two ground floor rooms, so when I stay there again I shall request one of them.
The room I used was sizeable and clean. The bed linen was spotless, and it was a very comfortable bed. However, it is a single and the duvet was a little narrow, leaving draught entrances when in bed.
The full length mirror in the room was on the floor leaning against the wall at an angle and needs to be hung properly. The tea making shelf was loose on the wall and could not be used safely. There is no wardrobe, just a rail with hangers.
The curtains were flimsy and let in all of the early morning light, which compounded the problem of the bright green LED light in the smoke detector on the ceiling above my bed which irritated me all night.
These are all very easily remedied issues and should not detract from an otherwise comfortable room.
The shower was excellent. Plenty of hot water at a good pressure.
The pub has it's own restaurant, and I went for the fish and chips. The service was very slow, however the waiter was very polite and attended to all my needs, albeit slowly.
My meal took an hour to arrive, but it was well worth the wait. Superbly cooked, a sizeable and really fresh piece of fish, and superb chips. I would say as good as any I have had, including the excellent Colmans in South Shields or any Harry Ramsdens.
I ordered breakfast, an extra £10 which I thought was reasonable. It was presented well and very tasty, in particular the sausage.
