We loved everything. The room was so nice with a little balcony that looks out to sea and , as others have said, the views across the town and sugarloaf are spectacular. It is in a lovely part of the city with a very safe feeling and enough restaurants to satisfy your needs. The staff are so warm and friendly with nothing being too much trouble. Breakfast is fabulous with variations every day and tables with lovely views. We had arranged to go back there for the last night of our tour and couldn’t be more delighted with that decision. Thank you so much to Stephan, Adrianna and all of the staff!

Absolutely everything! If you’re considering staying here, consider no more and book it before it’s no longer available because someone beat you to it! The property in Santa Teresa has the most unforgettable views of Sugarloaf Mountain and the Bay. The rooms are beautifully furnished and decorated as is the whole house. Antique furniture, personable art:photographs on the walls. It has tonnes of personality, as does the owner Adrianna. She is the perfect host. We felt at home from the moment we arrived and felt like we were leaving a friend by the time we had to go home. The beds, the shower, the daily cleaning, the adequate breakfast, the pool etc all made for a comfortable and memorable stay. Couldn’t have asked for more. If we ever return to Rio, we wouldn’t consider staying anywhere else.
The property in Santa Teresa can only be accessed by car for most. It’s up a series of steep hills. However, Ubers are widely available and super cheap. Not really something we didn’t like but just something to point out as a potential downside for those who get about on foot.

Was our favourite place we stayed in brasil and we stayed lots of places! Everything about this place is amazing, the location in Santa, the decor and comfortability, the staff are so friendly and helpful! The breakfast is so good and the view is unmatched!!
Nothing, it was perfect!

Charming bed and breakfast with a kind host / owner, tons of charm and character, and a stunning view.
Some of the facilities can be slightly dated, but this is a beautiful converted property, so it is part of the charm!

This place is marvelous. The history of the place could be a story for a book I would love to read. Both the previous owner of the house (Gerthrude) and the current owner of the B&B are extraordinary and interesting women. The breakfast is fantastic and offers lots of vegetarian options. The interior design is extremely well curated and we felt very safe at Gerthrudes. The view at night is fantastic.

Beautiful location. Great views.
We liked everything. But there are a few stairs if that’s a problem for you. It wasn’t for us.

The breakfast was excellent, and the breakfast room is one of the most beautiful we've ever been in in a hotel. Staff was incredibly nice and helpful. The rooms are all cute and uniquely decorated, and the view of Rio from the hotel is incredible.
Gertrude's is a beautiful old villa, just beware that the location is often "further away" from a lot of spots of Rio (e.g. Copacabana), but is perfectly located for seeing that part of Rio.

The house is really beautiful and the decoration is very special. Breakfast, and the view from breakfast, was amazing.

In a city buzzing with dense crowds, frenetic traffic, and busy beaches, this place feels like a haven of peacefulness. After a day in Rio, you retreat to the calm (yet still lively) neighborhood of Santa Teresa. It’s as if you’ve stepped into a countryside village. Bars, restaurants, and local music groups animate the days and nights, ensuring there’s always something enjoyable to do.
The surroundings of the hotel feel perfectly safe and walkable, even at night. You can reach the city center on foot without any issues during the day (though be prepared for a steep climb on your way back).
The hotel itself is wonderful; almost a second sanctuary within the bubble of Santa Teresa. It’s very clean and tastefully decorated, without being over the top. My room had its own bathroom, though I noticed some rooms share a communal one. However, the hotel doesn’t have many rooms, so sharing seems to work smoothly. The atmosphere is peaceful and relaxing.
Lying on the sofa on the veranda, with a view of the Sugarloaf and a good book, turned out to be one of the most unexpectedly memorable moments of my trip to Rio. This is a wonderful hotel with kind hosts. A place where, in a city full of noise and energy, you may finally find a moment to meet yourself.
As we say in the Netherlands: gezellig!
It's a bit annoying to get up there with ubers. Not all of them want to ride up to Santa Teresa, which makes you wait longer before a driver accepts your ride. But it's worth it.

We love the homely feel of Gerthrudes, the breakfast was amazing and the staff were very kind. The bed was very comfortable and the pool and garden area was lovely. The owner took the time to provide us with good recommendations and guidance about the area of Santa Teresa. The decor was lovely with many wonderful paintings and items of furniture that made you feel as if you were in someone’s home. The area of Santa Teresa was very cool, bohemian vibe with great restaurants. It was our first time in Rio/Brazil and a great choice given the relaxed environment.
We saw hummingbirds and had an amazing view each day at breakfast.
Nothing really. It would have been great to have a water filter nearer our room so we could have fresh drinking water. Santa Teresa is a great neighbourhood but a bit further out the way of the most popular areas in Rio but it suited us fine.

Located in a wonderfully creative cultural area Santa Tereza. Fantastic views of the Bay Area and Sugar Loaf mountain.
Only breakfast served. Would be nice to have the option of dinner too which you could have guests sign up for in the morning. An uncomplicated ‘Prato do dia’

Great location
Superb view from the dining room and the pool
Superb breakfast every day
Good air condition
Responsive and very nice host
Not dramatic (thus why I didn't ask the host to provide it), but:
- Missing a stool to put the Suitcase
- Missing shades to prevent mosquitos to get in when the window/door is open
- Hair dryer was very weak in my room
- Wardrobe doors were hard to move

Fantastic location in the hills overlooking Rio and Sugar Loaf mountain in the distance, walking distance to many different restaurants also had the best breakfast with fresh fruit and home baked cakes. Large room with Comfy bed. Chris who meet upon arrival provided many tips and tricks to enjoy our time in Rio. Could not find any fault with Gerthrudes and would defiantly stay here again.

I am slightly biased as this is my 2nd stay over the years here but I can’t help it, it’s my favorite place to stay in Rio! Adriana & team are a delight and have created something special out there in Santa T! The location, the view of sugar loaf from the pool/ garden, the rooms, cleanliness and breakfast - you just can’t beat this combo! Thank you as always, can’t wait to come back

The house is beautiful, family owned business that treats you very nicely. Views are stunning and you can see the care and time they have spent setting the space.
The location. Not many ubers want to drive there, as it is hilly. You will find a uber, but will take long. Not possible to walk at night in the secondary streets of santa teresa

The view is fabulous, staff are super friendly and helpful- especially Chris! It’s clean, comfortable, and had an excellent breakfast. Would stay again!
There seemed to be many rules posted about what not to do. I know this is necessary sometimes but it felt excessive.

Amazing breakfast and view, location, staff.
Was honestly disappointed with the room given what we paid and the fact that it claims to be 4 stars. I booked a “king suite” for two people, which turned out to be a very small and basic room, minimal furniture (not even a simple desk/table), the window was blocked bunch of tall plants that prevented the sunlight from coming into the room so it was perpetually dark. The bathroom was quite tired and def needed a lift — there was mold on the ceilings, rusty fixtures, toiletries refilled in old shampoo bottles, frayed towels.

Superb bed and breakfast in an ancient villa of Santa Theresa that has an i teresting hisotry (Gethrude's). Adrianna is paying attention to tiny details and making sure that everything is perfect. Our room was splendid and had an amazing view on the Sugarloaf. Bedsheets were comfy and bathroom renovated and superclean. Excellent breakfast served at the table in the dining room with the same amazing view! The only weak point is the location of Santa Theresa (hilly, narrow cobbled stone roads), which makes the access uneasy. Uber and taxi drivers are sometimes reluctant to take the ride.
