It was a beautiful, serene, clean stay and I would love to stay again. Perfect location in the city center too. Communication and check in were easy as well.
All was good.

Amazing location, little garden, quietness and the hammam! Super vibe and kind welcome from the owner. We really felt like valued friends. Will definitely come again and stay at Schopenhauer again.

Nice view into the garden, though looks a bit sad in winter. Quiet location. Friendly staff.
No clear instructions how to use Hammam, was not able to use it at all during the stay. Musty smell in the room, and also the shower smells off. Barely any usable electrical outlets next to the bed, and no really usable night stands. Wifi did not work, no stable connection at all. Lots of dust and dirt in the "heater hole" in the floor (I do not expect the cleaning lady to take care of that though, that seems a nightmare to get to). The entrance looks a bit shady, thought I was booking a hotel but it was just another AirBnB-situation where you grab your own key from a hole in the wall. The corridor towards the room is also not very clean (check underneath the bathroom boiler, it looks like it's been dripping on the floor for a year or two. No, this was not in a private utility room as the nice man is saying in his respone below, it's in the hallway to the bathroom, right next to the bathroom, in plain view) and difficult to squeeze through because art is just leaning on the wall
Lastly, please stop buying starbucks coffee pods, especially not the onest with roast level 8. I am not a snob about coffee, but that tasted awful and just burned.
Just also saw that the owner writes really arrogant responses to negative reviews, where he complains that people just don't "get" the concept and that they're stupid. I don't know man, that seems pretty rude. You entered into a transaction with us, we have the right to complain if we feel we didn't get what we paid for. Maybe take it less personally?
But I guess I'm getting one of those replies, too. Should have read those before booking, that one is on me...

Really interesting place and right beside the centre if the city
I least liked the bed which was built into the floor. Once I figured out the best technique for getting in and out of it, all was fine.

I need others to know the bed is sunk into the floor.
We found it impossible to get in and out of, my husband had to sit on the stairs and roll onto the bed! The toilet was tiny, the bath water was cold before it hit the bath tub! The shower was ridiculous, the water went everywhere. It took longer to clean up than to have a shower! The bath is sunk into the floor also with no handles or non slip bath mat.
The front room held no comfort, it was straight onto the road and the owner uses it as a shop/museum so people are looking in all the time. The only chairs are like old school chairs with no comfort at all! There is a small chaise lounge, room for 1 only! Nowhere to sit and relax!
The front door does not close and anyone can walk in!
Through a massive glass door there is no privacy when you go out, everything is on show! The curtains cannot be closed when you go out!
We were bitten to pieces, not sure if it was bed bugs or mozzies!
This was part of our honeymoon and to be honest it was NOT Good for us! Feel so disappointed and a total waste of money!

Eric is one of the best hosts you could ever dream to have! Even tho, there was a slight inconfort for us in the beginning, Eric insisted to make it right for us, it was wonderful!
Seriously, this has been so relaxing for us, it took me one week to come back from this trip and write this review.
The place is also right in the center, next to the canal, you'll be in the right place to visit the city!
For sure, if we come back to Gent, we'll stay with him.
Thank for everything! We look forward to our Antwerp at your other place!
Nothing much, Eric made it right arranging another room for us with the initial incomfort we had in the first room at the base floor.
Thank you again for doing this!

A sweet suite tastefully decorated with home furnishings, books and artwork. It felt like being home. Maybe not my home, but it felt more welcoming than virtually any commercial hotel room I've stayed in. The owner, Eric, dropped by to check if everything was alright and to offer breakfast. A kind man, and very helpful with info about the city.
The self check-in process went seamlessly. Pre arrival texts offering access codes, transport info and exact directions to find the place (which isn't marked on the outside) were spot-on. Rooms (there are 2, it is a true suite) were generous sized and felt
Street was busy during the day, the front room of the suite is visible to the public which gives you that "living in a fishbowl" feeling. There are drapes and grills to cover the windows, but then it blocks the canal view. A gauzy curtain or mesh screen might serve for better privacy.
There is no shower, but a large sunken tub with a shower head on a hose. I didn't try either as I was only staying one night. The tub lacked splash curtain and I didn't see an overhead holder for the shower head so it seemed like it would be awkward to take a shower.
Take note there is a restaurant right next door. Normally it is listed as closing around 21:00 but the night I stayed they were open til 01:00 for some reason. Eric informed me the next day that is very unusual. Despite this the room was surprisingly quiet. The only bothersome part was occasional whiffs of cigarette smoke, but even that was infrequent and I didn't feel like I was being gassed out. (I have a sensitive sense of smell.)
These negatives are IMHO really small compared to the quality and ambience the room offers. Would not deter me from renting again if I return to Ghent.

We really had a wonderful stay! The owner was very nice and quick to answer our questions when we had some. The location could hardly be more central, only a few minutes by walk to the Korenmarkt. The living room is amazingly decorated and the whole place filled with all kinds of interesting books about painting, history etc. The room was incredible, with the most comfortable bed you'll ever see, and a bath behind thin curtains to relax in the light of candles...we definitely recommend it!
Nothing, all was perfect!

Schopenhauer Apartment is one of the best luxurious apartments we have stayed in Ghent with the best value for money.
Very close to the Korenlei Historical Landmark, just 5 minutes walking, very spacious, romantic, and comfortable apartment .Mr. Eric, the owner, was very, very helpful and kind.
Many thanks to the Schopenhauer Apartment.
Nothing is missing.......it is really a very good apartment.

There was no breakfast offered at all. Really neat decor with Hanna and nice countyard. good storage. Location was great. nice robes and slipppers when had them.
Bath is not connected to room. Have to go out into a communil hall to get to the bath about 25 feet away. Told it was a private hall just for us but had numerous young adults going around with bath that does not lock. No light suffient for make up or even a good look. All just mood lighting in bath. only one small hook, not towel bars or any place to hange clothes or towels. Had to beg for supplies like shampoo, toilet paper, soap, water or coffee that was suppose to be provided. Only given hand towels first day no bath towels. Had trouble unlocking door to room. Had hole in floor about a foot square. No night side tables. With us staying 9 nights it would have been nice to have supplies that lasted more than one day at a time.
Took robe and slippers in middle of stay and never returned them. Just not consistent in service at all.

The location was perfect. Eric, the host, was very kind and fast at responding all our questions and requests. The room is super spacious and has everything you need.
Nothing critical but the wc room could be a bit bigger.

The location was very beautiful, right overlooking the river. Lots of wonderful shops right next door!
Nothing, it was perfect.

Eric's place - on the river in the heart of this beautiful medieval city - is the most elegant and comfortable B+B we've stayed in. Impeccable taste and decor - the room is furnished gorgeously and adorned with books in several languages - very, very comfortable shower and bathroom and pitch perfect location.
The only downsides we could find are that the photos on Booking.com don't seem to capture how elegant and comfortable it is, and that we had to leave after a single night. This sounds like it might have been written by the owner, but I'm a genuine guest. Best value for money in Ghent.

If you want an exceptional experience, specially if you are traveling with spouse or partner, then look no further! Schopenhauer offers an artistically designed suit, in which you will fall in love. Decoration, lighting and interior is eye-catching! The suit is way bigger than average you can get in Europe within such price range. The location is ideal, only 2 min walk from Gent's historical center. There are several amazing eating places nearby.
The hosts are a lovely couple, very friendly and intellectual! They will do their best to ensure a comfortable stay for the guests. The place comes with few nice surprises, which I won't spoil in here.
For me, it was the best reservation I've ever made on booking.com!
If you are traveling on own car, parking will be an issue nearby. Other than that, everything was perfect!

8.0 / 10.0
the atmosphere, the honesty bar and all the paintings/book around the room. The bed at floor lever is more comfortable than I though
There was no shower so we had to use the bathtub as shower, my partner is quite tall so not the most comfortable situation. The toilet is very small and see through, if you're not fully comfortable with your travel partner then it's not ideal :)
