Momijiya Annex

Beautiful traditional ryokan in an incredible location with beautiful traditional rooms. The hotel is located within the hilly forests north of Kyoto and it was extremely beautiful and peaceful. The staff were so helpful, caring and informative. Included a free shuttle bus to Kyoto and back every morning and afternoon. The food was brilliant, traditional Japanese food. Private onsen was also very good.

The things that stand out to me most about Momijiya Annex are the location, which is simply stunning, and the staff, who are truly kind and dedicated to their guests' comfort and enjoyment such that we felt warmly taken care of throughout our stay. We stayed four nights and loved our daily long walks along the river or visiting the beautiful, quiet temples in the area. The forest and river are lush and beautiful and we wandered almost alone through temple grounds, all of which was a soothing relief from the hectic pace of sightseeing in Kyoto proper and Tokyo and allowed for a much deeper sense of Japan and its culture. We felt the same about Momijiya Annex, where we were treated to plentiful, complex, traditional ryokan meals which we loved attending in the comfortable yukata and kimono jacket supplied with the room. The outdoor private bath was a delight where we relaxed looking out at a beautiful garden and the hillside behind it. I especially appreciated that the chef took the time and thought to create a beautiful gluten free menu for me that was simply delicious, quite different from my experience as a celiac-affected traveler in Japan otherwise.

Our room was a bit chilly with just a little mustiness and the furnishings are well used so it's not your place if you need everything shiny new and to the utmost standard of comfort. This ryokan is more about tradition and natural beauty and is fully steeped in each.

This Ryokan is an absolute must! I would recommend this location to anyone who is going to Kyoto and it wanting to experience a traditional Japanese inn. Along with including an amazing dinner and breakfast, the room we stayed in included its own private onsen. The location offers free transportation from two locations free of charge. Upon arrival, we had a mini tea ceremony in our room where a staff member showed us how to make the tea and explained how to where our traditional garments they provided. There are also multiple shrines around the ryokan that are fun to explore, but they all close around 5-6pm.
