Momijiya Honkan Takaosansou

True authentic ryokan experience, very beautiful surroundings, there is a river, mountains, forests and hiking trails next to the hotel. Great getaway from the city buzz. Would recommend to stay in the area at least for two nights and get a proper exploration of the nature and the village. The staff were very polite and helpful.

The food was very good and the room was clean.

One of the men’s onsens was not working; onsen water was not turned on. The one that was working was not hot enough in the morning. The women’s onsen was not clean, there was mold. Also, it was not hot enough, especially in the morning.

The location was really nice. The staff was very friendly and helpful from the shuttle service to the hospitality.

This was our first ryokan experience. The staff was very helpful and rushing to be of service! We communicated through broken Japanese and broken English but it worked. The private onsen was lovely and very hot. We enjoyed the view!

Now that we have had a bit more experience with traditional Japanese food and onsen, looking back at this ryokan we found it kind of disappointing. The rooms were quite old and we never considered taking a shower after seeing how dirty it was. We washed in the private onsen that we booked, since there is a shower up there too. The dinner and breakfast experiences were definitely the worst. The food had a traditional style but we had no explanation other than “fish” or “mountain vegetables”. The tempura was cold and soggy. The miso soup also tasted very strange compared to endless other miso soups we have eaten since. We went into this with an open mind and expected something unusual, but this food definitely was the worst to do it with for the first time. Even the oily broth duck tempura was so bad we couldn’t eat it. Everything was barely warm, but in a way that made us think it had been lying around for a few hours.
