We loved the beautiful gardens — being able to open the screens and sit drinking tea while looking out at the garden was a highlight. So peaceful. The house was entirely private. We enjoyed being shown how to wear the traditional dress and make tea, and the whole stay had an authentic feel for how traditional living once was. The evening meal was exquisite: ten courses of unique dishes that gave us a beautiful introduction to elevated Japanese cuisine. They were also very generous in accommodating our eating preferences, given advance notice. Adding to the authentic experience was sleeping on tatami mats during a major thunderstorm — it felt like we had traveled back 400 years. We were very grateful for the hospitality, including the rides from the train station to the inn and on to Magome the next morning.
The bathrooms were very simple but were certainly clean and perfectly functional.

A beautiful old ryokan. You get your own little house set in the lovely peaceful gardens. The Onsen is lovely and we were given access to a private one for the second day of our stay. The staff are so helpful and provide transport to and from the train station and took us to Magome too so we could hike the Nakasendo trail. The food is delicious but very Japanese
The futon mats take a bit of getting used too. They will provide western pillows if you ask

This was a dream stay. Perfect for a full Japanese culture experience. The meals were way too much for us to consume and super delicious. The hotel shuttle bus to the city was such a privilege. The host and all the staff were unbelievable, we will def be back

It was traditional.
It had a very musty smell and I should have left immediately but I did not want to be rude and had already paid and it isn’t inexpensive. I woke up with a severe reaction to the mold and mildew and feel there should be a disclaimer- had I known I would not have booked.
