There is no denying that Strathmore House is a very spacious, impressive looking and extremely well -equipped villa with amazing views over Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles Mountains. It was clean and very comfortable. We stayed 3 nights in February 2026 as an extended family group of 11 – 9 adults and 2 children. Unfortunately, our stay was marred by a number of niggles and incidents which prevented it from achieving an outstanding 5 star ranking that a luxury villa of it’s calibre should merit!
On the day of our arrival, we found the road completely blocked off by highway maintenance machinery (forcing us to manually manoeuvre a large quantity of luggage up a steep road before even being able to access the property). We then endured 2 days of extreme noise and the vibration of heavy machinery as the whole road was literally dug up and then re-laid and tarmacked. Whilst the host indicated they had received no prior warning, the housekeeper had clearly been in the property well before our arrival, yet there was no attempt to communicate the situation to us or provide luggage assistance in the circumstances. The noise continued late into the evening on both nights and significantly impacted both the ambience and our enjoyment of the villa, totally preventing any attempt to experience a sundowner from the terrace. At no time was any attempt made to recompense us for the huge inconvenience experienced – this is not the customer service standard expected from a luxury property.
Indeed, on the day of our departure, the hosts made us feel very uncomfortable at the speed with which they sought to expedite our check out before 10 am.
Whilst we did like our stay, it was not the premium experience we were expecting.
1. The beach is more than a 4 min walk & the online property description did not give any indication of the steepness of the climb up & down from the beach to the property – which was further compounded by the very steep & narrow staircase inside the villa – up 1 floor to the 2 bedroom annex; up another floor to the 4 other bedrooms and finally up a further floor to the living area, outside terrace and pool – definitely not child friendly! 2.The hot tub was situated on a decked area directly off 3 front facing bedrooms. Alternative access was via an extremely narrow side staircase down from the main pool, but this was slippery & not safe for children or adults. Moreover, the hot tub was not hot & did not meet expected cleanliness standards. 3.The air con was not available in all the bedrooms. 2 on the 2nd floor lacked individual controls & the 2 annex bedrooms only had fans - a real problem for our group. Certainly, a property of this calibre should have air con throughout. 4. There was not a safe in each bedroom -indeed the only safe on the main bedroom floor did not operate a& although this was highlighted to the host on check in, no action was taken to rectify. It was discovered that there was a safe in the main living area, but this was operated by a key not a code and accordingly not suitable. Accordingly, the safety & security of our personal belongings was put at risk.5. Only 2 sets of keys including alarm fob were provided, which wholly insufficient & a great inconvenience to co-ordinate when our group separated out into 3 or more directions during the day. This could have been easily remedied with either the provision of a key safe for guest use or simply additional key sets. This was another example of an issue which was raised with the host on check in and disregarded/ignored.

Fabulous location
Advertised with hot tub which was one of the reasons we chose this property over others.
Hot tub was not working as it was too cold.
Gas bbq was not working properly. Again advertised with gas bbq - did not meet expectations
