Our worst experience with a property after many years of successful bookings on this platform

The general location is great and very central. Unfortunately, the exact placement of the apartment on the first floor (2nd story for Americans) was directly across from an abandoned and boarded up apartment and faces towards the alley (not the street that's pictured).

We were charged a €500 deposit on top of the price listed on Booking, so that was the first misleading thing. Second, we were charged €20 for late check-in, but when we got to the property there was no reception or key exchange, merely a lockbox outside the door. We were charged a €122.67 cleaning fee, but when we arrived the apartment was not clean. The walls were dirty, there was broken furniture, there were cigarette burns on furniture, the couch was sticky and smelled like dog, there was dried food stuck to one of the stools, the mattress was stained, the toilet bowl was not cleaned and reeked of stale urine, we discovered cockroaches and cockroach feces in the cupboards, the fans had about a centimeter of dust and mold caked onto the blades, and the same goes for the air vents in the ceiling. We contacted the property manager, and they kept saying they'd look into it but never did. They only sent us partial refunds and only after much back and forth. On the second to last day, the wind blew the door shut as we were preparing to go for a walk and take out the trash and we got locked out. Luckily we had our shoes, wallets, phones, umbrella (as it was meant to rain later), and the trash bag, but my sweater and the only key were on the table and the door locked automatically. We immediately contacted the property manager by phone and SMS and did not get a response. We then decided to go to lunch and wait for a reply. We didn't get a reply for over an hour. When we finally did, the local contact told us that she wasn't in Marseille and that if we wanted a spare key we would need to travel to another city over 50km away (Bandol) and collect it from the nearest office location; otherwise, we would have to wait until 9:30am the next day for them to bring us a key.

Unexpected damage charge!

Good location, clear instructions for check in / check-out.

Loud music from the gallery downstairs all day. Noise from the alley way at night. Lack of cooking utensils. Stained mattresses. On our return, we have been told that we damaged a duvet and would be charged 54 euros. We have asked for evidence of this, which they have not given me. They have not responded to my emails and have taken the 54 euros off my credit card. When we leave from all our stays, we always leave things tidy, and to help the cleaners, we strip the bed of all linen and pile together. It's a small thing, but im sure it helps. When we did this, we noticed that the duvets on both the bed and the sofa bed were not in the best of condition. Disappointing really.

Les frais liés à la caution (c'est la première fois que l'on me facture de tels frais ! (alors que je voyage depuis 40 ans! ) Le ton menaçant lié à la restitution de cette caution alors qu'il n'y a pas d'inventaire de ce qui est mis à disposition ( il n'y avait que 2 cuillères à café par exemple) et que si l'appartement est relativement propre, on voit bien qu'il n'a pas été nettoyé sérieusement avant notre arrivée (nombreuses taches au sol, en particulier dans la salle de bain). Les taies d'oreiller pour le canapé ont été retrouvés en boule dans l'armoire (!) Si le matelas du lit était très correct, celui du canapé était très "cheap".
