Lovely cosy cottage on the shores of a loch. We loved the views, and the wood burning stove was great on a cold night. Friendly helpful hosts. Location was very central on the island, so we could get to most of the main sights in 20 minutes or less.

Our host Bella greeted us on arrival. The cottage was warm and welcoming with excellent views over Stenness Loch. We had a local food hamper to start our holiday as well as logs for the wood burner to light our first fire.
The cottage was spotlessly clean with absolutely everything you would need for a cosy, comfortable stay.
We had to change our dates three times due to adverse weather conditions and ferries unable to sail and Bella did everything she could to assist us. Thankfully, we were lucky and unusually Bella had a few days leeway!
A lovely additional touch was fresh eggs from the friendly , knowledgeable farmer on passing by.
Thank you

Perfectly situated for accessing all corners of Orkney. Beautiful views over the Loch, the northern lights treated us to a nice display too. The cottage had everything we could have possibly needed, and more. Bella & David are lovely hosts, and we would most definitely stay again. Local shop is only 4 minute drive away in Stromness, Kirkwall is only a 20 minute drive in the opposite direction. An incredibly comfortable stay and a home away from home.
We loved everything!

The hostess was super helpful - we were on bikes and she drove one of us into Stromness to buy supplies. The view of sunsets and sunrises across the loch from the little cabin in the garden was spectacular.

The house was lovely - the photos don't do it justice! There is everything you might need. You can see the Ring of Brodgar from the garden. Bella was great and went out of her way to make us feel welcome, even alerting us when the Northern Lights were showing. Would definitely stay again if on Orkney

Great communication with the hosts ahead of arrival. The fresh farm eggs, milk, bread and a few other goodies were a very welcome surprise. Location of the property beside Stenness Loch is beautiful.
This property really only works for travelers with a car.

stunning location , comfortable cottage , clean and roomy . Amazing views across the loch to R.O.B .

This is a small cottage semi detached from the owners part, but nonetheless it is private, there is a sheltered area to sit outside and a summer house a bit closer to the loch, from there you can see the ring of Brodgar, Maeshowe and the stones of Stenness are just hidden by a headland. The facilities are good enough to cook a smart meal with a bit of thought. The sitting/dining room is fine, right next to the kitchen. The shower room is functional and had an electric shower in a good surround which works well although a bit idiosyncratic on start up. Two of us were very comfortable, although we are used to a lot of space at home so would have found it a bit crowded if there were another couple as well. We were given a great welcome pack which included some fab eggs from the hens that peck around the buildings, they are pretty tame and came to us looking for extra goodies to eat!
It’s not a “didn’t like” - the cottage is plain pebble dashed like so many places on Orkney so not much eye appeal, but works well inside.

All good lovely location. Some goodies left by owner. Didn’t actually see them , so would have been nice to say hello. However we were out most of the day.
WiFi sometimes a bit hit and miss but guess due to location
Orkney is lovely location.
WiFi not always good

Location is lovely, quite a bit off the main road, perhaps 40 meters, but the main road isn't busy. Only about three miles from the ferry terminal and easy to find. A very quiet location really, and great communication from the owners
It was excellent

We really enjoyed out stay here despite the poor weather. Wonderful views across loch and glimpse of the Ring of Brogda and very close to many outstanding archaeological sites. Location made visiting very easy. A very quiet and tranquil location which felt homely. Very comfortable and clean and very relaxing.

The location of the cottage is fantastic. Close enough to Kirkwall and Stromness, but also well away from them with a gorgeous garden overlooking the water.
The cottage is well provisioned with milk, eggs, loaf and jam provided. There is also every kitchen device you'd expect to make self catering easy.
Lounge area was great, beds were comfy and the WiFi was pretty decent.
Communication with the owners was easy, quick and friendly.
There isn't anything really for this box, so don't pay to much attention to the very minor thoughts. Literally the only thing I can think of was a few of the doors were difficult to shut.

Ideal cottage to base yourself whilst exploring the island, 10 minutes from Stromness and around 25 minutes to Kirkwall. all amenities provided, rooms are two doubles and a single, plus lounge/diner Kitchen and bathroom, utility cupboard with all sorts of things you may need. TV in lounge has a Sky Q connected ( sometimes WiFi can drop off... in which case read a book) Kitchen has a washing machine so clothes can be cleaned. Outside is a summer house and a bench to sit and look across the Loch towards the Ring of Brodgar.
Nothing, we have stayed here before so knew what to expect. Remeber this is an island, dont expect city life and dont expect 100%fast WiFi 24 hours a day.... as it can be hit and miss.

Superb location. A good base for exploring the island.

Nether Onston has a brilliant location for the many Neolithic sites at the centre of Orkney: you can even see the Ring of Bridget from the garden, and walk to them all if you don’t mind walking on the main road. The accommodation is half of a small bungalow (owner’s parents in other half, very friendly), and is made less pretty by a set of typical Orkney corrugated-asbestos farm buildings dwarfing the cottage: but it has a lovely view over Loch of Stenness, and a short-eared owl hunted right past the garden. The kitchen was very well equipped, everything one could want. The owners were. Dry attentive and friendly, in correspondence.
While it is possible to blast out hot air from a wall mounted a/c fan, if you don’t enjoy being blasted there was only one convector heater to use for all rooms, so we tended to be cold. The timers for the hot water and bathroom hot-pipes did not do what they were meant to do: the owners responded immediately, but even after making a visit to fix them, nothing improved. Hot water, one could just push “boost” an hour or so before needing, but the bathroom remained chilly.

Once Covid is no longer an issue, this cottage is ideally situated on the main road between Kirkwall and Stromness just outside Stenness, where there are several of the key historic sites. There is also an hourly bus that will stop on demand at the road end, taking you to either of the two main towns
