Nether Onston Cottage

Perfect location. Bird life - ducks, geese & swans plentiful. Cozy & Comfortable, we didn’t want for anything. Host was extremely thoughtful, a starter pack with milk, bread & the freshest of eggs & other goodies were supplied & much appreciated. Also, very accommodating & helpful during ferry issues which was a ‘God Send’ Neighbours were a delight, and full of local knowledge & information

Having to leave…

The beds were so comfortable! It was helpful to have a kitchen to make meals when we wanted to. The view was lovely, right on the loch. The host even gave us Farm fresh eggs to enjoy. I loved the location, right near the neolithic sites in Stenness. It was also close to Stomness where we got the ferry to the island of Hoy and not far from Kirkwall

As an American, charging our devices was a little challenging as we were using the adapters for David’s CPAP

We are a family of 4 from London. We stayed 3 nights. The host left us fresh eggs (from their own chicken), milk, bread coffee and tea. Communication was very easy and clear. The location is awesome, you can see the Ring of Brodgar from the garden looking out over the salt water lake. The standing Stones of Stenness are 5min away, Stromness is good for food shopping, strolling through the pretty streets and has a nice pub (Ferry Inn). Sara Brea and the beach there, Marwick Nature Reserve and the Brough of Birsay are a must! Watched the eclipse from the garden!

The property is in an excellent location, close to both Stromness and Kirkwall and within easy distance of most of the main neolithic sights. Bella was an attentive host who was very responsive to messages.

We were surprised to find that there was an electricity meter that required £1 or £2 coins - this was not made explicit in the property description or in any communication prior to the stay. The hosts had put £15 credit into this but in adverse weather like we experienced this wasn't enough. It's the first time in any property we've had to pay extra for electricity. There were radiators but these didn't work and instead the main heat is generated by two large wall mounted air heaters. These were just about sufficient to keep the property warm. There is a wood burning stove but no instructions on how to use this and as people who have never used one we did't feel comfortable doing so. The bathroom was generally clean but there was mould around the base of the shower and the shaving light did not work. Also food that previous visitors had left in the fridge and cupboards was also left - whilst this was mostly dry goods we would have expected dairy produce like margarine to have been removed. Whilst the property is on the banks of the Loch we expected that there would be good views from the interior but only the French doors in the lounge look out onto the loch and the view is largely blocked by the summerhouse.
