The decor was lovely - all the appearance of a stylish hotel. The reception and waiting staff were excellent, especially a young pleasant girl from New Zealand. The ambience of the place was warm and friendly. Convenient location.
I wasn't able to take a shower - no way can I stand in a bath - as an arthritic OAP - way too dangerous. We knew we were paying (a lot) for only a compact double but we struggled to get round the bed... just a warning - it's a real squash with zilch view - quite claustrophobic. Rang 0 for reception several times as we couldn't get the Wifi to connect, but no response - they were busy as a noisy function on, but still... fortunately it eventually connected. There was no bedside light - you had to have two main lights on, operated by a switch by the door, so needed to get out of bed and stumble back... No glass for a drink of water - lovely mugs for hot drinks, but I'd have appreciated a glass, or even a bottle of water considering the price of the room. The night before, we'd paid half the price and a lovely fresh bottle of water and glass was available. When we went down to the bar, then the dining room, for the most greasy fish and chips I've ever had, the barmaid was incredibly loud, swearing from behind the bar so intrusively, so that our own private conversation was hard to enjoy. We've been travelling around Scotland and the Hebrides for some time - sampling loads of beer battered fish and chips - all fantastic - this was honestly by far the worst, yet the most expensive - the cloying taste of grease was really unpleasant. In the morning, the bacon was like burnt leather - totally inedible - pepper all over the tomatoes - why bother putting a salt and pepper pot on the table if it's going to be served smothered in pepper? In fairness, my husband was fine with it, but I ordered 'lots of tomatoes' and was served one half of one covered in pepper. So the chef, and the noisy, swearing barmaid, and the 'overly compact' compact room and inablity to shower, rather spoiled what was an 'expensive', quality hotel for me.
