An exceptional stay! This is the kind of gem one would like to keep a secret... but it would be unfair. It offers both the impersonal 'come as you please with minimal interaction' hotel modality and the warm, personal 'learn more about the people and the place' modality of the gîte. The owner, manager, is caring, kind and helpful far beyond the call of duty. The beds are extremely comfortable and the rooms are well insulated and quiet. I also enjoyed the little touches many more expensive hotels don't necessarily offer: the well appointed tea/coffee corner, paper tissues, extra pillows and blankets...
It is very well situated, surrounded by theatres, museums, restaurants, shops and bus stops. Perhaps most precious of all, for those who care to find out more, its very long history, dating back to Roman times and perhaps even earlier.

Perfect location, extremely nice staff (they don't speak any English but they're very patient and use smartphone tools to communicate), the most beautiful garden that you can sit in and go to right from your room. Also, it's quite a budget place but it's really taken care of, it's not expensive but the owners tend the place, the interiors are decorated, each room has its own style. It's not very important for a traveler but I think it tells a lot about the attitude of the owners and how they care about their business.
The only thing I didn't like was the price of the breakfast. I bought it not knowing what the prices in French hotels usually are. It was tasty, sure but still it was a bit disappointing to pay 24 euros for a croissant with a piece of cheese and some jam, while in all other hotels that I stayed at the breakfasts cost 9 euros and were much much bigger and had a larger variety of things to eat. So, the hotel is great but if you can, just eat outside.

A hidden gem but a work in progress.
Amazing staff, very central. Storage for bikes 🚲
Stairs, nothing wrong with stairs unless you are carrying heavy luggage

Quirky and rather old fashioned place in amazing quiet central location. Lovely owners and delightful breakfasts in the extensive and quite garden. Free parking (but see below). Overall we enjoyed the experience..
A very hot time 33 degrees plus and room was consequently very warm all night. Free parking accessed through arch off Grand Rue proved extremely tight (for SLK Merc) so get guidance to avoid le crunch! En suite toilet would probably not suit larger people.

This is a family run hotel, a bit quirky but a delight to stay in. Madame is both helpful and amusing. 'Continental' breakfast - fine. Garden to sit in if the weather is good. Locked garage for bikes. Comfortable room. But it's the atmosphere and otherness that I liked.

Quirky. Nice but somewhat messy garden.
Room directly above the huge air conditioners was very noisy all night and had a terrible view, tiny tiny bathroom.

Location
Dirty, decor very tired, bathroom mats randomly on the corridor floor, windows rotten, poor attitude of owner, car aerial deliberately damaged in tiny car park where accidental damage wasn’t possible.

The photos on the website do not look at all like the actual rooms or the reception area. There is extensive construction going on and a high degree of chaos in the breakfast room and the garden.

It was great to have a safe place to store my bike. The garden was very nice and quiet.
Staying on the last floor below the roof, it was very very hot without air conditioning. In general, the hotel needs some renovation.

Nothing, it was vile, really difficult to find, buried in the back of nowhere, no decent signage, wasn’t even sure we’d found the right place, virtually no parking, what little parking we found was a shambles, certainly not suitable for motorcycles. No lift, just an endless amount of stairs, we were put on the top floor of an otherwise empty hotel, no ventilation or air conditioning, the manager/owner spoke zero English and initially waved me away several times with a flippant gesture, I finally found a young lad who we think worked there and spoke some English, he translated for me but the woman at the counter snatched my phone off me and then threw it back on the desk after checking my booking reference. Rooms were small and cramped, our ‘triple room’ clearly was a just a double with a dirty little cot bed added in the corner under a low bulkhead to make it three beds. Bathroom was tiny and the shower drain was blocked, all in all one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had, the pictures are VERY misleading, it’s nothing like advertised. I wouldn’t stay there again of it was free to do so…. Absolutely awful place
I disliked everything

Great location.
When we arrived the room was dirty with menstrual blood on one sheet. So we went to something like garden and waited until the room was cleaned. As a satisfaction the reception gave us rotten bananas and opened old orange juice... In the "garden" were heaps of bricks and other building materials and also hens were behind a fence. Never more.

Good location and quaint building
We booked a family room with a double and 2 singles, when we arrived they said they didn't have that any more and gave us a room with 2 doubles which was not suitable for us. Admitted they messed up, but then charged us again for stay when we had already paid through booking. com.
Shower only trickled out, and 2 towels for four people.
Overall not a great experience 👎

A great place tucked away in the centre of town, lovely garden to sit in, clean room, nice little balcony. Slippers and dressing gown were a nice little touch.
Coffee could have been replenished to last for a cup for each day I stayed. Due to the work going on outside, there were no realistic parking facilities.

Location was great.
Room size was too small for family. No lift for 4th floor

The hotel is centrally located, and the staff are very friendly.
The trash in our bathroom was full when we arrived, and the provided mugs did not seem to be very thoroughly washed.
The Wi-Fi did not work at all.

Our host was so caring, whilst having no English, worked with us to use goggle translate.
wifi was a little slow and started whirring if we wanted to download a movie.

Difficult to get in a front door was locked and had to step over builders rubble to come in side entrance. when it rained that afternoon the place leaked like a sieve, towels laid out all over the stairs and buckets also to catch some of the water.
Could not get the parking that was booked as builders took up the space.
Rooms not as big as stated, no sound insulation as stated but got to listen to people next room (interesting not)

We liked the location in the centre of the city. The couple running the place were pleasant. The hotel; had recently had a major renovation/refurbishment.
The breakfast was expensive considering there was no cooked food just the usual array of off-the -shelf food and although we had paid 11.50 each and booked a specific time when we checked in (9.00 am) the hotel was not ready and had over-looked us. When we parked our car we weren't prepared for such a narrow and challenging entry (very tight for a Toyota Corolla) we were made to 'fix up' our parking because the bumpers weren't touching the wall. As it turned out we were the only ones with a car, so this was a redundant exercise. We had booked a garden suite, because we are smokers. The proprietor gave us a tour of the garden. There was an unwalled 6 metre drop into the neighbouring property and bags of builder's waste outside our door. For other tourists these opinions might seem petty but we came away unrefreshed and exhausted.

Small, comfortable and very helpful owner. Lovely spot, and very central.
Access to hotel not easy in the old town with narrow streets. very good parking on site-secure.

The host had obviously been a local for a considerable period of time and was able to advise on different activities and places to visit / eat. The hotel was situated right in the center of town. It made walking to restaurants and other parts of Besancon really easy. The room was clean and the bathroom was modern.
On arriving, the temperature was the other side of 35 degrees and the room we had originally booked (A family room) was as hot as an oven. The host offered us two rooms on a lower floor for no extra charge. They were significantly cooler and also afforded us more space.
The room was very hot (Its been a bonkers summer) and it made sleeping very difficult. In opening the window, the noise of a large air-conditioning unit for the adjacent building made it very noisy in the room.
Parking is available - but its tight and I wasn't prepared to get my E-Class stuck in the narrow passage way to the hotel

Quirky garden.

Great off beat decor.
That eventually I had to move in ! Besançon was fascinating.

The hotel is well located in the centre of town, but quiet due to being withdrawn from the street in a cosy backyard.
It is familiy-owned and breakfast is served in a combined reception, office, and living room, amid the family's stuff - cosy enough. There are small balconies to the rooms, facing a green (if somewhat worn) backyard and garden area, and equipped with chairs and a table. This highly improves the otherwise quite dark and somewhat stuffy (but clean) rooms.
Rooms were a bit dark and stuffy (but clean, and with small balconies facing the garden).

Great location in old part of town.
We were made uncomfortable by the staff as a comment was made as to the cost to the business since we used Booking.com.
4.0 / 10.0
Breakfasts were O.K.
Central location
Small room that required carrying luggage up three floors.
Finding the place isn't easy, access is awkward, not helped by city-wide clearance sale / market which gridlocked the place.
