Scenic views, unique experience. Breakfast had a nice selection of breads, fruits, meats, cheeses and pastries in a very enjoyable setting. Staff at breakfast were attentive and cordial. Many restaurant selections within a short, but hilly walk. In particular we enjoyed our meal and view from Il Terrazzino Ristorante and the tour of the artifacts in its basement.
While we were happy to visit Matera, our stay at the Locanda Di San Martino hotel was a disappointment and not worth what we paid. We typically are not ones to complain. However, our experience at this hotel warrants criticism. Staff could be friendlier. The clerk on check in was not very welcoming. Although a porter was in the lobby standing next to our luggage, he did not help us take luggage to our room. The heat was on in the room despite it being high 70s outside. The room was very hot, 83 degrees F (28.4 Celsius). Even with windows open all night, sleep was very uncomfortable. We couldn’t shut the heat off ourselves even though daytime temperatures ranged from high 70s to low 80s — in April. Although the hotel’s website lists air conditioning as an amenity, the fact is air conditioning could not be turned on and we could not control the room temperature at in the room ourselves at all. Maintenance staff, who were cordial and apologetic, came multiple times and even they could not help cool room to a more tolerable temperature. The first front desk clerk my husband spoke with about the temperature in the room was rude, unprofessional, and curtly said to him — well, if you don’t like it you could leave — this occurred around 11pm at night, after a long day of travel. It took much persistence on our part to get concerns addressed and finally, the second night, after much aggravation the staff offered to move us to a different room nearby — from room 10 to room 6. Temperature in room 6 was tolerable at 76 degrees F (24.4 Celsius), bath/shower was nicer than room 10, however debris from ceiling mortar was fell off just outside shower stall above toilet when we showered. Unpleasant stay for these reasons.
