We booked a last minute trip around Scotland without prior reservations or realizing how busy it is in September. We booked this stay because not much was available in Stirling for under $***/night.
I tried not to judge this place from the outside but it's just as bad on the inside. If there is one saving grace it's the staff (except the cranky lady at breakfast). The hotel controls the heat for everyone and, despite the chill, they hadn't turned it on. The front desk woman was very kind and brought us a portable heater. We only asked for an extra blanket/comforter but, shockingly, none were available! There was some discarded trash in the hallway, the whole place is run down looking and somewhat grubby. For $200/night you can't even get breakfast! We ate dinner in the hotel and it's just not good. There is an espresso machine at the bar but don't dare ask for a cappuccino in the morning because the grumpy lady is "far too busy" (in her words) to make one for you and, apparently, there is no one else. At least she let us have a regular coffee for free but they don't even put out sugar next to the coffee pots, only "sweetener". I can't take that because of my kidneys and it's got an awful taste anyway (I used some before I realized). I had to ask for the sugar and offered to put it next to the coffee but she wasn't having it. She made me feel bad that she had to go to a table in the dining room to get it! This part of Stirling is not nice and we were very glad we were only there for one night.

The building from the outside is a little nondescript but it is much nicer on the inside. We found the room and en suite to be quite spacious and comfortable. It could have been improved by air con and nicer amenities in the room but good for the price. The bar by reception was a nice addition, with a comfy and welcoming vibe. The star of the show was the staff. Every single person we interacted with made us feel very welcome, from the cleaning staff to the receptionist and bar staff. Everyone was lovely. The manner of the staff gave what is not a small hotel the feel of a much more personal experience and we loved our time there. Thanks very much.

A little out of town but more than made up for by price much less than in town centre and good service and staff. Would definitely stay there again.
