The charming Northumberland village of Lowick is home to The Smithy, a carefully renovated stone cottage offering accommodation for six guests. Inside, a large open-plan kitchen and lounge area gives access to a private garden, ideal for an al-fresco breakfast or an evening aperitif. Lowick lies within a few miles of the dramatic Northumberland Coast and is an ideal spot from which to explore this richly historic region. The village is often referred to as the gateway to the Cheviots, a large expanse of beautiful rolling hills stretching across the English/Scottish border. Horse riders, cyclists and ramblers will love the numerous footpaths and bridleways which run through the picturesque scenery. Nearby Berwick-upon-Tweed is the most northerly town in England and offers a bustling shopping experience as well as many historic attractions. Also nearby is the picturesque town of Alnwick with its cobbled walkways and world famous castle. Other ‘must-sees’ are the picture postcard village of Bamburgh, which is almost dwarfed by its own hilltop castle, and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne which is accessed by a tidal causeway. From the coastal village of Seahouses, bird lovers can take a boat trip (in season) to the Farne Islands to see the famous puffin colonies.

Lovely cottage in lovely location
The Smithy is well equipped and in a lovely location to explore the area. Nearby Ford and Etal were a delight. The information folders at the property were particularly good. The layout of the property was ideal for us, especially as it had a ground floor bedroom with en suite bathroom.

I couldn’t fault this place apart from we didn’t have any kindling to light the fire and there were only a few logs provided. Luckily we took our own as the corner shop was also shut so we wouldn’t have been able to buy any there. Otherwise the place was spotless and every need was met. Lighting in the lounge not really bright enough. Extractor unit over job not functional. Other than those minor points everything is first class. Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo

We all thought the cottage very warm and cosy, bedrooms were furnished very well , bathrooms were roomy with plenty of hot water at all times. The equipment and kitchen crockery etc were all very nice. If we had to find a fault it would be the bedside lights, with dark shades it wasn't possible to read with them. Because there were a few faults with equipment and it was difficult to get someone on the phone, could I suggest that you leave a simple form on the kitchen table and ask people to fill it in with a cross or tick against all appliances as they leave, at least the cleaning lady could then pass it on. All our photos were out and about Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo

We really enjoyed our break here but were disappointed that there was no welcome pack and no basic essentials such as salt and pepper. Whilst understanding that Covid secure guidelines have altered many things, there is not consistency among holiday cottage owners. A friend of mine also booked a holiday in another area of England and arrived to a wonderful welcome pack, cushions on the sofas, games and books. There were none of these things at our cottage. I fail to see the logic in taking away cushions but then leaving the cushioned upholstery on sofas and arm chairs. Also, we know that the virus is very short lived on paper and card, so why take away the books and games? Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo
