Onyado Yuinosho, Shirakawago

Nice architecture, quiet ambiance, understated elegance. Food was outstanding. Restaurant layout is thoughtful and private.

Great large room with lovely view over mountains. The Onsen was very pleasant and nice to have a private Onsen you could go into.

The breakfast was terrible. It’s the only hotel in the world I’ve stayed where no option is given (other than for the main course on the first day). You are simply served a huge Japanese style meal (looked fab if you like this). For a hotel that is seeks to be sustainable, just looking around the trays and reviews here they are wasting a lot of food. The hotel is also around 2km from the historic village with nothing much around it. They offer a shuttle bus during the day but not at night. They only offered us a fixed evening menu too. I’d expect a 5-star hotel to give more flexibility and options.

The hotel was very clean and the room was big. The onsen was nice and felt like private.

The location of the hotel was on the street - nothing special and if you are looking for a traditional ryokan experience I wouldn’t recommend this place because it felt like being in a nice hotel but too many people around - very touristic and food was not great to be honest.
