The Lady Maxwell Room at Buittle Castle

It’s unique history and wonderful hall for breakfast. You won’t find any other place like it. Grounds are lovely with nice walk by riverside.

Our room ( Lady Maxwell) would benefit from another bedside lamp but appreciate the historic fabric of building may make this challenging.It was difficult to find property even on satnav. Entrance is from a slip road which is easy to miss. Would benefit from clearer signage.

The venue and host.

The host was really lovely and spent time explaining the history of the castle to us. Really quirky place, especially liked the setting of the dining room where we were served breakfast.

Very limited availability of power sockets in our room. I found a multi socket extension lead under the bed and used that to enable me to blowdry my hair in front of a mirror, it just about reached the mantle mirror over the fireplace. I also had to move both the kettle and coffee machine nearer a power socket across the room in order to make hot drinks. It was only the next morning that I spotted an inaccessible extension lead behind the wardrobe which would have enabled me to use the gadgets in situ!

Tobias the owner is an excellent host and chef. The castle is a perfect quiet retreat and room and dining hall full of quirky antiques. A very interesting and educational stay.
