    I fully acknowledge that I booked a non-refundable rate, and that was my mistake. However, I realised six months in advance that I would be unable to travel, so I contacted the hotel to ask whether the booking dates could be changed. I made it clear that I was willing to pay any difference in price. The hotel simply refused and replied that I was still welcome to stay on the original dates. I understand that rules are rules, and the hotel is technically entitled to enforce the booking conditions. Nevertheless, in all my years of travelling, this is the first time I have encountered a hotel unwilling to make any adjustment when given six months’ notice, even where the guest is prepared to cover the fare difference. Thank you to the hotel for giving me a new understanding of how differently the concept of hospitality can be interpreted.
