Town: North Wales' Caernarfon in Gwynedd has a long and rich history and culture. Tourists flock to the area because of its 13th-century castle, well-preserved town walls, and lovely waterfront. Tours of the castle are offered throughout the year, as well as special events including historical pageants. The Welsh Highland Railway also has a station here, and it travels through the beautiful countryside, stopping in the settlement of Beddgelert before continuing on to Porthmadog. Attractions in the immediate vicinity of Caernarfon include Segontium, a Roman fort and museum that houses numerous valuable artefacts, as well as fishing excursions. Shops and restaurants are plentiful in Caernarfon; it's also just a short drive from beautiful beaches and mountains in Snowdonia, including Llanberis, a popular climbing town near Mount Snowdon's foothills.
