Town: Ambleside, at the northern end of England's largest lake, Lake Windermere, is a great place to stay while exploring the rest of the central Lakes, including nearby Grasmere and the Langdale Valley. Cruises, boat trips, and watersports on Lake Windermere itself are just some of the things that can be enjoyed here, and the village itself has plenty of shops, restaurants, and pubs to suit any palate. Waterhead's parkland provides beautiful views of the lake and a small beach, and a stroll in the opposite direction along Stock Ghyll through the woods leads to the hypnotic Stock Ghyll Force waterfall. In addition to the lake and the excellent hiking opportunities, Ambleside is well-known for the rushbearing ceremony it holds every year and for the tiny "Bridge House," built in the 17th century and now serving as the National Trust Information Centre.
