⭐ 4/5 Friendly staff and a great location in quiet Babbacombe make the Trecarn a solid budget stay. The rooms are clean and perfectly fine for a short break—just expect décor with “character” and Wi-Fi that occasionally forgets it’s Wi-Fi. Parking is on the street, but overall it’s good value and a comfy base for exploring Torquay.

The décor is, well… retro. And not in the trendy, Instagrammable way. More in the “that carpet definitely remembers the 90s” kind of way. Guests frequently mention that the hotel could do with a refurbishment, especially in the bathrooms, which some found small and a little tired. Wi-Fi can be patchy enough to make you reconsider sending that email—or perhaps embrace an impromptu digital detox. Walls are thin too, so you may get to know your neighbours more intimately than planned. Parking isn’t the Trecarn’s strong suit either. There’s no dedicated car park, so street parking is the name of the game—occasionally several streets away. Consider it a free warm-up before check-in.

Nightmare at the Trecarn hotel

Apart from the staff that were on shift the night we arrived Absolutely nothing about this hotel was nice.

The day shift staff(apparently management) rude and no name badges The room was freezing cold dusty and very dirty the bathroom had mould on the ceiling. Asked to be moved to a different room, a little warmer but when checking found everywhere was thick with dust,even down the back of a chair and aling the top of pictures,the beds were ripped underneath The food was awful. I would avoid this hotel at all cost.

Safe and good location.

We stopped here while walking the South West Coast Path, nothing too flashy about the property but quiet and a good view of the surroundings but we felt safe and could dry off.

It could probably do with some modernisation but for the money it was fine.

Large coach bookings with coordination and 2 he queue at reception. Rabbit warren of extremely hot rooms with seemingly random numbers. Distance from Torquay - requiring long bus ride or expensive (scarce) taxi.

Affordable for a night stay.

It was good as it was quite cheap,we booked it early in the morning just stay a night as we were travelling from Northampton.

It is really outdated. It needs a real good clean/redecoration. Our room wasn't clean. But as long as we could sleep a night it was fine.

Lift not working. Went to use fan because it was hot in the room had to take the fan a part to clean it was filthy. The hotel needs a big make over and the outside windows good clean.

Everything basic was available Even though we were next to nocturnal music the sound proofing was excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful The bed was really comfortable The TV worked very well , with lots of choice. We thought it was good value for money

Good for relaxing, but only if you don't mind parking on a street full of other hotels.

There was not much, mostly non-veg. Cereal was all we had, and at £12, it was not expected. Evening music was good, but far too loud. The pillows were good. There is not much to say about the mattress, though.

We requested a sunny room for our afternoon relaxation, but ended up with one that didn't quite match our hopes. We had to close the curtains due to a security camera's line of sight. It’s a bit awkward when the first thing you see upon waking is the toilet—definitely not the best position! Breakfast wasn't included as expected, and we had to spend £12 each, which was a surprise. Our next adventure took us to Tesco Express, which was delightful! However, parking turned out to be a challenge. We had to pull our luggage from a nearby street, so I wouldn’t recommend it if you find walking uphill tricky. Basic accommodation in a very dated setting. Unpleasant smell throughout the communal areas.

Lift out of order. Navigating the hotel with a newborn in a push chair was extremely difficult due to narrow passage ways and steep stairs.

Very dated room,very stuffy as there was only one window, view was lousy,bathroom was the best bit very clean and shower hot, no parking on hotel property only on main road, it was a roulette to see if you could park near the hotel, not good as my wife has knee problem.

An old hotel in an excellent location which would benefit from some modernization.

The staff were friendly and helpful.

In one room there was no soap in the dispenser by the shower, and in the other room there was no dispenser at all. The hotel manager dealt with these issues. There were no floor mats for when one gets out of the shower/bath. We asked about this and were told that they were not included as part of the hotel service. If we return, in the summer, we will ask for a room which doesn't catch the afternoon sun - it was very warm in one of our rooms.

Cheap and cheerful hotel. Very worn out and dated, but perfectly adequate for a quick nights sleep between work assignments. Check in staff were great.

Hate being ignored by staff. Sadly this was the case at check out. Five stood around chatting while I waited - was eventually acknowledged by a friendly cleaner who was passing.

The staff were all great but the hotel room was disappointing.

The staff were lovely. The entertainer was good.

There was a huge wet patch in our room which we had to step over to access the bathroom. The room was a little shabby, cheap fittings, cracks in the plaster. There was no shower, just a bath and the bathroom was very small and angular, you had to be careful not to knock yourself. The bedside light fitting was wrong so the shade flapped around. We could just about fit into the bath and the space around the toilet was really limited. Very cramped.

Babbacombe was really lovely, and quite eclectic. Friendly staff. The hotel is a little run down but has charm, I saw other guests enjoying events.

Hangers were attached to the rail, but I suppose some people steal them.

Room 154 was awful. Have been staying at the trecarn regularly for the past year, and rooms generally have been ok. But very disappointed with room 154 and was charged £55 for the privilege.

Great value good location & exceptional staff!

The friendliness of the staff I encountered - receptionists and the ladies servicing rooms whom I asked for assistance in finding my room- nothing too much trouble. Location is spot on too! Breakfast hearty and tasty.

I liked everything- there was nothing to dislike.
