We stayed at DOGE CAMBIASO for three nights with three adults and three children. The apartment itself is located in a historic noble palace, just a short walk from the aquarium and the old port. On paper it looked perfect. In reality… it was an interesting experience. Let’s start with the good parts, because there were several. The apartment is spacious, clean, and has that classic old Genoese charm — high ceilings, period details, and a proper lived-in feeling rather than a sterile Airbnb look. There is only one bathroom, but it is large, the water is properly hot, and the pressure is excellent (no weak drizzle here). Central air conditioning worked brilliantly, which in July is not a small detail. The host replied quickly and was generally helpful. There is an elevator. It is slow and roughly the size of a phone booth, so your enjoyment of the ride will heavily depend on who you share it with. But the fact that it exists already puts this place ahead of many historic buildings in Italy. The living room opens onto a private terrace/balcony. The view from there is actually quite nice. The balcony itself, however, is small and gives the distinct impression that it was designed more for decoration than for actual human occupation. Standing on it feels slightly adventurous — we tried it, the structure held, and we immediately went back inside. There is also a rather steep staircase leading to another small outdoor area. With young children this felt more like a liability than a feature, so we simply avoided it.
Now about the location and the city. Genoa has incredibly beautiful architecture. The narrow streets, the old buildings, the balconies, the window frames, the details — when you look up, it is genuinely stunning. The problem begins when you look down. The streets are dirty, there is a lot of graffiti, discarded mattresses, clothes, and general neglect in many places. The atmosphere in parts of the historic centre and especially along the waterfront did not feel particularly pleasant or safe in the evenings. Having Carabinieri almost next door was reassuring, but it also told its own story. The view from the apartment windows is mostly into neighbouring windows and laundry lines. If you are the sociable type, you can almost shake hands with the neighbours. The “grande terrazza privata” sounds more impressive in the title than it feels in real life. Small practical issues: – There was no WiFi password left in the apartment, so we had to use roaming just to ask for it. – The city tax was never mentioned by the host in our WhatsApp communication. We only discovered it after leaving. Would I recommend this apartment? Honestly, no. Not because the apartment itself was bad — it was clean, functional, and had character — but because the surrounding area and the general feeling of the city did not match the beautiful photos you see online. Genoa has potential and some genuinely striking historic corners, but the dirt, the neglect, and the atmosphere in the centre made it difficult to enjoy. We left without any major disasters, but also without any desire to return. If you are determined to visit Genoa and want a spacious, air-conditioned place in a historic building close to the aquarium, this apartment will do the job. Just lower your expectations about the neighbourhood, watch your step on the balcony, and keep your children away from the steep stairs. Rome stole our hearts. Genoa mostly stole our willingness to look down while walking.

Very spacious and clean. Host was excellent. Very thoughtful leaving cold water in the fridge for our arrival.
