Ryokan Shinsen

Ryokan Shinsen could be described as the traditional Japanese equivalent of a Four Seasons hotel... but better. We stayed in the Waraku villa, which is quite large, with a small open-air bath, having breakfast plus dinner. The Shinsen's approach is premier-league service with excellent Japanese food. Initially we failed to adapt to their approach because, for the first breakfast we headed off to the place we had dinner the previous night. Only to be "found" and escorted off to a different room for a wonderful breakfast. A bit too late we realised we should wait in the villa to be collected and taken to the relevant room for each meal. A different room was used each time. The villa was comfortable with everything needed including complimentary drinks, yukatas and pyjamas. A smart TV meant we could tap into Netflix etc. I'm not one for obsequious service; however the staff managed a good level, particularly when serving meals. Each dinner had an English translation of the 9 courses, but breakfast didn't have this, possibly something to consider? Attention to detail is top-notch. There's a bell at breakfast & dinner to get service and to end the meal (we failed to understand this at first and had staff chasing after us). Ladies can have a complimentary yukata fitting session. If you want a top quality Ryokan experience I highly recommend the Shinsen Takachiho.

Nothing really. In the Waraku Villa, the door to the toilet is low which I failed to remember several times. It would benefit from some padding. The toilet has automatic jungle sounds, so I disconnected the power at bedtime.

I had an exceptional stay at Ryokan Shinsen in Takachiho. Everything was truly perfect - from the warm and attentive service to the kindness of the staff. The meals were beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious, and the facilities were elegant, comfortable and well maintained. Every detail was thoughtfully arranged, making the entire experience feel relaxing and special. I would give a 10 in every category without hesitation.

Beautiful Japanese traditional rooms with a wooden hot tub in each room and a little spot to have your morning tea or coffee. Lovely little gardens out of every window.
