Takanawa Hanakohro, a Member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World

A lovely welcome upon our arrival. We were served matcha and treats at check in. The lobby and hallways are stunning. The Japanese style room was large with tatami mats and tea area. So beautiful. Our room overlooked the garden (which is how I reserved it). The staff was gracious and helpful. We ordered a traditional style Japanese breakfast tin our room and it was, of course, beautiful and delicious. The bathroom and toilet room were generaous, beautiful simple and functional. We walked through the garden several times during our stay. So beautiful. We loved it! It was our last night in Japan and a lovely one. I highly recommend!

We had full access to the Grand Prince Hotel buildings adjacent to the garden. What a difference to our hotel! The Grand Prince design is tacky and hardly anything was open. We attempted to have a dinner there and only stayed for one appetizer. We would;d have just left initially but we did not want to be rude. The restaurant (I don't remember the name) was fully lit with horrible fluorescent lights and the tables were surrounded with cheap grass curtains. It was horribly loud. The restaurant was the absolute worst we've experienced anywhere in any country! We loved the rest of Japan! If you stay at the Takanawa Hanakohro just stay there and don't bother with The Prince!

Japanese breakfast is superb. The staff couldn’t have been better. The hotel is true luxury and close to Shinagawa station so easy to get to; the main Tokyo attractions are a train trip away. The Japanese garden is serene in such a busy city.

The hotel is part of a large complex and using the spa and sauna was in another part of the complex.

The shower was not getting to the desired temperature, It was too cold and after long time started to become too hut but I could not get it to the temperature needed. The chief at breakfast was very unfriendly and we felt he was rude.
