Umaya Ubud Villa

We absolutely adored our stay at Umaya. The staff were so friendly and helpful. But really it was the location that made our stay SO special. We had already visited the Monkey Forest a month ago but felt called to stay closer to it this time. Little did we know the week long experience we were going to have with the monkeys! Adored their little pitter patter on the roof every morning, popping their head over the roof to check us out, laying on the pool lounge and looking up to them staring down at me from the tree above. Having to keep the doors closed at all times, because the big daddy monkey got in a couple times (one time running off and eating a whole tub of kids multivitamins!). Umaya is located at the end of a quiet street up a laneway running parallel to the forest. There were cheap massages steps away and gorgeous cafes and restaurants readily available. Cafe Lilu located right next to Umaya was our favourite, both for their delicious vegan options, but more so for the visiting monkeys at the windows as we ate. The best part was the 4 minute walk through the monkey forest to get to Monkey Forest Road and the busy main part of Ubud. We would walk there to grab a taxi instead of them having to go all the way around to get us from the villa. It felt like a unique experience of us being the caged animals, while the monkeys could visit and gawk at us instead. We will definitely be back and wish we could’ve stayed for longer than a week! Kids loved the pool and inflatables too! This was our second favourite stay on our 2 month holiday.

We have no complaints to be honest! The doors were all ridiculously hard to open (annoying when trying to keep them closed from the monkeys). One of the tv remotes didn’t work and the toilet seats kept breaking but honestly it all felt like it was a part of the hilarious experience of living alongside the monkeys. None of the little things took away from our stay as they won’t be what we remember and we’re so thankful we stayed here.

I have stayed several times and always appreciate Gusti and his staff. Bed is very comfortable and love the daily monkey visits. Food is made to order and always fresh.

Location was fantastic - total privacy in a jungle environment away from central Ubud. The villas are very 'rustic' and private - we loved the whole experience. Just a short stroll to a number of lovely cafe's and restaurants. Bali Bohemia was one of our favourites! The Manager Gusti couldn't do enough for us - and explained all about the Monkeys in the Monkey forest next to us, which really helped us to understand their behaviour. Suksma Gusti - you were a really lovely and kind host....and your breakfasts were fantastic!!!

This would have been a stunning resort in it's day - but it's fairly tired now....but that's its charm! Have to be honest and say the few Monkeys that came our way were a bit of a worry during their early morning wakeup routine playing in the trees and in the evening before sunset when they went back to their home in the forest. We got used to them fairly quickly, but were a bit wary relaxing by our private pool (especially if we had snacks....we discovered they can smell food and will come for it}!! But our villa was right next to the monkey forest - so hey - it was us that were in their territory!
