Montcalm Brewery, London City

Room comfortable enough but broken aircon on the first night, fans provided helped but not a great sleep. Moved rooms and very comfortable airconditioned sleep 2nd night, very good selection at breakfast.

Room showed signs of age. Broken aircon first night, no other room so fans provided. Duty manager Asif extremely helpful and moved us for 2nd night, much better sleep. Expensive for the location.

The location was a good base for the weekend. The staff are a credit to the hotel. Every team member I met was friendly, polite and professional and did everything they could to help when asked. The room, and bathroom, were a good size. The bed was very comfortable, once you were in it. The breakfast buffet was good quality and plentiful.

The bed was very high. I am only 5ft 2in and when standing the mattress was at my hip height, which made it difficult to get into. There were hooks at the top of the back of the bathroom door for hanging bathrobes/damp towels, etc. but, again, they were far too high for me to use. There was a good quality hairdryer provided but it didn't have a directional nozzle for effective blow-drying. It was one of the hottest weekends of the year so far and the aircon in my room was not working. I didn't discover this until I got back after the theatre on the first night. I slept very badly. I reported the fault to reception the next morning who were very apologetic and said they would get a technician to look at it and in the meantime have a cooling unit put in my room. The breakfast room was long and thin and the tables were closer together than at a Premier Inn. I was out most of the day, having had tickets for a matinee and an evening performance, and got back to the hotel about 10 p.m. It had been a very hot, very busy day and I wanted to finish the evening with a drink in the hotel bar. The Concierge told me that there was no bar at the weekend but I could go for a drink at the Jugged Hare a little way down the street. I did not want to have to go out again and elbow my way to the bar of a packed City pub on a Saturday night. I wanted a quiet drink in the hotel bar to chill; something I expected to be able to do in a 5 star hotel. It's more than ironic not to be able to get a drink in a "Brewery"! I understand that a 5 star hotel should have 24-hour room service, if the Montcalm has this it was never mentioned to me. There was no hotel information at all in the room and all I was told by the staff was the breakfast times. Going back to the room I discovered that vent/fan area of the cooling unit was at the height of the bed base and that you couldn't feel any flow of air when you were on top of the mattress.

Room wasn’t ready and arrived after check in time, air con worked but not the best, fridge in room not working properly, room furniture bit shabby and in need of update. Breakfast room small & tables very close to one another.
