A delightful semi-rural French experience

The lovely gardens. We sat in the cabana and had wine and hors d’oeuvres prior to having our dinner (brought with us). Everything was so clean and immaculate and Yvette was so charming and ensured our stay was everything that we wanted. A delightful lady 😃

A perfect stay in Valencay

excellent from start to finish - we were able to check in at 3.30 instead of 5pm.. Madame Yvette was very accommodating on all points of our stay. She explained clearly about the property, beautiful garden and accommodation. Secure parking which was very reassuring. Very comfortable spacious room and excellent en suite shower and facilities. Views were marvellous from our upstairs bedroom window, beds comfortable, excellent coffee at breakfast with home made jam for the bread and croissants. Madame Yvette was charming, gracious, and kind. The house is immaculate in every way. A short walk from the main street and chateau in Valencay. We highly recommend a stay at Les Charmes.

A lovely home with a beautiful garden. We only stayed one night, but I can imagine it would be very pleasant to spend evenings in the garden. Host was lovely, very friendly and helpful. The decor is a little old-fashioned, but the room was comfortable and large, as was the bathroom. All very clean, plus lots of extra toiletries provided if needed. Breakfast was very tasty, particularly enjoyed the large selection of home-made jams.

We loved Les Charmes especially Yvette's hospitality and helpfulness. Her breakfasts were lovely with local produce and even plums from the garden. Having air conditioning in the main bedroom was an unexpected bonus during the heatwave! The house is full of beautiful lace work and interesting ornaments.

nous avons été accueillis très chaleureusement par Yvette dans son magnifique jardin dont elle s'occupe pratiquement seule avec courage! La maison est joliment décorée :Madame Zografos brode beaucoup!L petit côté suranné nous a enchantés. Et notre hôtesse n'a pas hésité à appeler un restaurateur pour nous prendre une réservation! Le petit déjeuner a été très agréable et nous avons pu échanger avec madame Zografos très simplement! *Vraiment un lieu à découvrir et une belle rencontre. We zijn geweldig goed ontvangen door de eigenares. Een prachtig huis met een mooie tuin. We konden onze was doen voor de volgende dagen naar Santiago de Compostella. Het ontbijt was een feest voor het oog en was zeer lekker.

L’art de ne pas recevoir

Le lieu est bien situé et conforme aux photos : rustique, un peu figé dans son jus, mais cela fait partie du charme annoncé. Malheureusement, l’accueil a terni l’ensemble de notre expérience. Dès les échanges préalables, nous avons été confrontés à une rigidité déconcertante. Malgré notre participation à un mariage débutant à 14h, il a été extrêmement difficile de convenir d’un simple passage pour récupérer les clés — nous ne demandions pas à accéder à la chambre, simplement à déposer quelques affaires de valeur avant de rejoindre la cérémonie. La réponse a été sèche : “Je ne suis pas un hôtel.” Aucun effort, aucune compréhension. Il a fallu insister, négocier, argumenter, pour que finalement, elle consente à un compromis minimal. Le lendemain matin, après une nuit blanche, nous avons été réveillés à 10h11 — soit 19 minutes avant l’heure officielle du check-out — par des coups frappés sur la porte et des rappels autoritaires sur notre heure de départ, comme si nous étions des enfants en tort. Fatigués mais respectueux, nous étions pourtant prêts à partir dans les temps. Le petit déjeuner nous a bien été proposé, mais dans une ambiance glaciale : la propriétaire nous a lancé un laconique “le petit déjeuner est servi” — le tout accompagné d’un regard fermé et de bras croisés, en bas de l’escalier, façon comité de sortie. Elle avait d’ailleurs insisté la veille : “Si vous prenez le petit déjeuner à 10h, vous partez directement après, sans retourner à la chambre.” Nous avons préferé ne pas la déranger plus longtemps tant l’accueil de cette belle matinée dominicale fut agréable. Nous voyageons très souvent, en France comme à l’étranger, et c’est la première fois que nous rencontrons une telle absence de bienveillance en maison d’hôtes. L’impression générale est claire : vous n’êtes pas les bienvenus, juste tolérés, tant que vous respectez strictement les règles. Aucune chaleur, aucun sens de l’accueil.

Een deugddoende, aangenaam verblijf, goed voor een kort verblijf of doorreis naar het zuiden.

Het ontbijt was zeer verzorgd. De dag van aankomst werd ons gevraagd wat we graag voor ontbijt kregen. Mevrouw was zeer attent en de croissants met de verschillende zelfgemaakte confituren waren overheerlijk. De locatie bevindt zich in het centrum van Valencay, dicht bij het kasteel. Een mooie tuin met mogelijkheden tot picknick indien gewenst.

Chambre magnifique très soignée. Un accueil très sympathique. Excellent petit déjeuner servi dans un très beau service. Nous avons été entièrement satisfaits. La chambre est munie d'une clim, ce qui est fort appréciable pendant les grosses chaleurs. la chambre d'hôte se situe à quelques centaines de mètres du château, il est donc facile de s'y rendre à pied.
