The location and staff were mostly helpful and friendly. The hotel is in a beautiful historic building, the location is stunning with a great lake and alps view. The room was as described, good breakfast
The experience was not at my expectation: upon arrival we were informed that both the Spa and Restaurant for dinner were fully booked. No alternatives were proposed, there was room service though only replying calls late in the evening. I was hoping to have a bath at least to relax but the room had only a shower. The hair dryer burned once it was turned on leaving a bed small in the whole room. The staff came to check it out but just advised opening the door for a while around 10pm to ventilate, no replacement was done. The day after we had a chance to go to the Spa to find out the Sauna was also broken. The beautiful building and location balanced out but in a nutshell I was expecting more for a 5 star hotel

Every light fitting was unique and all Murano glass.
Maybe that the curtains in the rooms were always closed and the dark paint colour.

This was our 2nd trip to the property. Our son learned to sit down in the hotel when he was tiny so we have a very beautiful memories. Staff are always very friendly and professional. Breakfast is top notch and spa swimming pool is just amazing! We love to return again and again. At the heart of Stresa

Review: Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées – A fading echo of grandeur
The setting still whispers of Grandezza. What once stood for noble restraint and cultivated elegance is now merely a facade.
Rooms and corridors retain their majestic aura, proud remnants of a house that remembers what it once was. The garden remains enchanting. The lobby greets you with solemn dignity. But the illusion crumbles the moment you look closer.
There was no corkscrew in the room. I asked politely for one, corkscrew as it’s known in English. The concierge sent me to the bar without a word. The bartender looked at me, confused, and after a brief explanation informed me that I would need to bring the bottle downstairs to have it opened there. This, in a five-star hotel. In Italy. In the land of wine. A ritual of helplessness masquerading as a service procedure.
In the garden, the white wine is served in plastic cups.
At breakfast, the transformation is complete. What once felt like a Grand Hotel becomes simply a hotel.
When I asked for a newspaper, the staff looked at me as if I had asked for something ancient and irrelevant. I mentioned Le Monde, Financial Times, Frankfurter Allgemeine. Still, blank stares, then a plain and unembarrassed no. I was advised to ask at the reception. There, the young staff member was equally perplexed. The concierge next to her gave a silent shake of the head. No apology, no smile, no hint of understanding. Just silence.
The silver spoon on the table wasn’t polished. It was dirty. I asked for a clean one. It arrived, without comment.
The breakfast room reflects the modern condition. iPads flicker like altar lights. Tracksuits and muscle shirts are worn with the casual entitlement of once-elegant robes. Phones lie beside cutlery like holy relics, always ready, always the priority. The salmon, artfully arranged, seems to aspire to haute cuisine but leaves a heavier aftertaste than it should. One is tempted to see it as a metaphor.

Beautiful property in a good location - room size and view were both great
Rude staff and poor service - no one helped us park the car or even carry my bags in when my husband left me with them at the door. Wouldn’t let us check in until 3pm on the dot even though the room was clearly ready (we checked). Bar staff ride and huffing and puffing (Martha in particular) overall bad service - had to ask for tea and coffee in the mornings at breakfast rather than them coming to us - no one explain facilities or usage even at check in.

Jaw dropping decoration. Beautiful property with amazing facilities (two pools, spa). We were upgraded to a lake view suite. Fantastic!
Service wasn’t always in keeping with the standard of the hotel.

My stay was truly wonderful, starting each day with an outstanding breakfast on the terrace with view of Lago Maggiore, relaxing in a beautifully designed and comfortable bedroom, and unwinding in the fantastic leisure facilities. All this made the experience unforgettable; the hotel’s attention to detail, friendly staff, and luxurious atmosphere exceeded all expectations.

Beautiful hotel in an excellent location. Attentive staff. Good breakfast. Wonderful SPA.
The outdoor swimming pool is not convenient, one has to walk out of the hotel to get there.

Breakfast was excellent, a huge choice. And everything well cooked and beautifully presented
Minor issues. A $5 charge to have ice brought to your room ( essential for a G&T!), this should have been complimentary. Also we frequently didn't have wine glasses as we'd used them the night before and it took a couple of days for clean glasses to reappear - so we had to use bathroom tumblers.

Very stylish rooms, beautiful property overall perched by the lake with fantastic views all round. Pool is large and well equiped, breakfast was splendid as well with a large choice and in a fittingly elegant room.
Gym hours were quite unfriendly, bound by the pool opening hours. Would expect this to be open 24/7 or at least from early morning hours for the typical gym-goer (i.e. from 6am not 9...).

Although our room was a bit small for 2 people, I loved the hotel and would definitely stay there again. The hotel was spotless. It is absolutely gorgeous. The food in the bistro and at dinner in the hotel was excellent. The servers was very good, and the concierge was very helpful and friendly. I couldn't change the battery in my air tag and I think it was Felice that helped me with that. The setting is one of the most beautiful in all my travels right across from the lake with the most awesome entrance and the grounds are exquisite with the foliage. Loved the indoor/outdoor pool. Swam every day in it. Ate lunch at bistro everyday. Had breakfast outside on the terrace of the restaurant daily. The hotel is about 2 blocks from the town and also the dock to get the boat to the islands. Just sitting and looking out at the Lake is an experience in itself. When (not if) I come to Stresa again, I will definitely be staying here.
I should have booked a larger room, but otherwise I loved the entire experience.

Location was good and hotel looks very nice from the outside and also from the inside, besides some facilities.
We chose this hotel to celebrate my girlfriend’s birthday, hoping for a memorable and relaxing getaway. Unfortunately, our experience left us quite disappointed, and we feel compelled to share it.
The hotel showed a lack of flexibility in every aspect. One of the most surprising and frustrating policies that we discovered once we arrived, was that the spa access was not permitted for us as guests for more than two hours and needed reservation, which was nowhere written while booking. Since we didnt know this, we didnt use the spa Friday nor Saturday. Hence, we wanted to use the spa facilities for a few hours on our last day (Sunday), after breakfast and check-out (leaving the room available for new guests). However, the surprise came when the hotel informed us that we can not use the spa on Sunday since its our last day :( we finally managed to stay for an hour after asking for a late-check-out. It felt wrong, like we were begging for it.
We’ve stayed at many wellness hotels, and this has never been an issue before — typically, guests are allowed to enjoy the spa on their departure day.
At this hotel It became clear to us that they seem to prioritize external visitors who purchase spa day passes over their actual hotel guests, which really took away from the exclusivity and relaxation we had hoped for.
We had informed the staff in advance that we were celebrating a birthday, expecting at least a small gesture or some form of decoration at dinner, especially since I had specifically requested it. Sadly, the restaurant made no effort. When I asked about simple birthday balloons in the room, we were shocked to find out that two number balloons would cost 80€, which just felt unreasonable and opportunistic.
All in all, the experience was far from the special birthday celebration we had envisioned. With a little more attention to detail and guest care, this could have been a much more positive stay.

Beautiful hotel. Very well located. Lovely breakfast
When we arrived by car to the reception, we were quite invisible to the staff. Unloaded and brought all bags in ourselves. There were staff to help but, given we were the only ones arriving at the time, no help given.

Beautiful hotel public areas
We stayed in May, there was no AC and the room was too hot for comfort. Front desk staff said there was no fan to provide.
Our junior suite had a tub shower combo, yet some less expensive rooms (401) have walk-in shower!
We had dinner at the hotel, ordered ‘fried’ lake fish. The fish was poached, skin was soggy, unappetizing. My dessert brownie was missing its sauce until I asked our waiter about it & he returned it to the kitchen for another.

We picked the hotel for the spa - really lovely and modern with a great outdoor heated pool. Breakfast was amazing, in a wonderful setting. The room was garden facing but still had lovely views. It's an expensive hotel but one night was worth it for the spa.
The room was quite small and the bed wasn't the comfiest for a 5* hotel. They were quite strict with the spa- we arrived an hour early but we weren't able to use the spa so we instead waited in the reception bar which wasn't very nice- there was a conference on and the service was poor.

This hotel is a magnificent grand property with exceptional staff to match. The room we had was cozy and inviting with a wonderful balcony overlooking the lake.
Best of all.... as it rained a couple of days, we spent time in the Spa which was amazing and the perfect place to rest and unwind.
Breakfast was excellent and the staff were attentative and polite.

Great location, well kept common areas and friendly staff
Room was old and noisy (staff chatting early morning under the window and late night guests leaving the property). Quality of breakfast very poor in both choice as well as quality of ingredients, really disappointing. ai asked for my invoice ti be emailed to me at check out and the staff refuses saying they don’t do this….which is surprising in this kind of place. Overall it feels like it carries on it’s old grandeur but lacks the quality required for a real 5stars hotel.
