Located in the village of Cockington, Granary Cottage is a first floor holiday apartment located above one of the prettiest thatched gift shops in the village. Situated close to a pretty tea room, the property has been decorated and furnished to a very good standard. Only ¾ miles from Torquay’s seafront and 3 miles from the town centre, this is a perfect spot to take a holiday. Whether you like walking, birdwatching or taking a perfect lazy holiday, Cockington has it all. A real picture-postcard village, Cockington has hardly changed over hundreds of years. There is evidence of Iron Age and Saxon settlements near the local pub, and the village is mentioned in the Domesday Book. This thatched village is the perfect setting for a walk, no matter what time of year it is. It has an historic forge, a court and church, tea rooms, thatched pub and, of course, the lakes and woods. The village sits somewhat incongruously, right in the heart of urban Torbay, but stubbornly refuses to be tainted by modern developments. The village is one of the most photographed places in the country, and the surrounding country park and woodland makes it an ideal destination for walking.

The pride of the village is Cockington Court, originally owned by the Cary family from 1375 to 1654. It is now home to Cockington Chocolate Company with their sweets, truffles and gifts, and a fabulous contemporary arts and crafts hub, showcasing creative arts from, amongst others, glassmakers, a blacksmith and conceptual artists. With beautiful gardens and a fabulous tea room, its a great place to spend the day, with plenty to see and do for the whole family. Cockington Court also has a connection to the English Riviera’s most famous daughter, Agatha Christie. In her youth, she often visited the village, and her novel ’Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?’ is dedicated to her friend Christopher Mallock. The Mallocks regularly staged amateur theatricals at Cockington Court and, despite her terrible shyness, Agatha Christie regularly took part. Think afternoon tea, cricket on the green and the gentle pace of village life you would find in an Agatha Christie Miss Marple novel (without the murders of course!), and you have the rural idyll that is Cockington. If you want to truly experience traditional, English country life, come to Cockington on the English Riviera, South Devon’s beautiful bay.

Brixham and Paignton are also close by. Take a trip on a steam train from Paignton to Dartmouth, enjoy the theatre at Torquay or take a ferry over to Brixham for the day. There are also many National Trust properties nearby. Beach ¾ miles. Shop 1¼ miles, pub and restaurant 500 yards.

Free WiFi

No babies in arms allowed. There is a small grassed unfenced area with a bench. There are steps down to the kitchen and steps to the entrance.

No children under 12 years old.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Completely unlike any other cottage. The surrounding parkland is beautiful and varies from open fields to dense woodland. Great walk through the water meadows to the seafront. Only warning - there are 3 staircases in and outside the building which might be difficult for some. We would love to return sometime. This is a lovely comfortable cottage.
This is a lovely comfortable cottage.
This is a lovely comfortable cottage. It has steep uneven steps up to the entrance, therefore not suitable for people with mobility problems. It is situated in Cockington surrounded by beautiful grounds for walking and relaxing. Our dog loves this location as he has plenty of space to run. It is situated next to a great tea room, for your afternoon cream tea. The seaside town of Torquay is just a five minute drive away. It has a beautiful beach, marina plus shops and bars. The cottage is situated in a great area for exploring the area. We have been there 3 times and feel very comfortable there. Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo

Good location. This property has steps to door as per photograph, but also has steps down to small cold kitchen which perhaps should be made more obvious if some potential bookers are not so mobile. The Drum is handy as is Cockington Country park with nice walks and several small businesses and cafe.Parking up hill, whilst covered by the owners, would again be an obstacle for less mobile visitors especially when there is another car park on level closer..The negatives are on mobility problems, the positives would outweigh those with location, scenic beauty, decent weather and meeting nice people wherever we went. Also good area for dogs.

We used the car once all week to go to Dartmouth. Nice touches in the Cottage with tea coffee and milk waiting. Covid 19 measures are well catered for and you should feel safe in the spotless environment. Enjoy your stay we certainly did!! Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo
