About this country house rental

Opening again March 2026, after cottage used by staff.

The Sawdon Station Allanvilla Farm Cottage is a family friendly, rural hideaway. Rustic and cute this cosy wee two bedroomed cottage offers spectacular views out over the farm and to the southern alps. A real high-country experience.

Whether you are after a relaxing get away or fun filled adventure, we would love to accommodate you.

The cosy cottage stays warm and cosy in winter with the great log fire(and heat pump) and is a sun trap in summer. This cottage is very retro, and a kiwi bach (older).

We have a maximum of 4 adults for this cottage. Full tea, coffee and sugar supplied, but no milk. Just need to bring your clothing, and food.

Have a long weekend, in front of the fire, watching movies and reading books, or skating, tubing and hot pools with the kids. Summer months enjoy some extra days walking, cycling, or just spending time with family.

Only taking 3-night minimum bookings as we are hardworking couple, with multiple jobs, and want to ensure you have the best time possible in Lake Tekapo.

Close to Lake Tekapo, with its excellent hot pools, skating in winter, the night sky, the lake for swimming, boat cruising, and fishing. Walking to the top of Mt John for the best cafe in the world, and the best Japanese restaurant in the country! In the winter, two ski fields one (Roundhill) 30 minutes from the cottage, and the other (Mt Dobson) 40 minutes.

Please note the following as booking:
Please ensure as you book you let me know and actual numbers staying, so I can give you the correct price per night.

Special conditions:
* Smoking outside only.
* The cottage is located on a working high country farm so caution is to be taken as there are many hazards.
* If you decide to leave before the end of your stay there is no refund of nights accommodation.

This cottage is on the owners beautiful family farm. If you’re a retro lover you’ll be thrilled with the authentic 70’s decor. The cottage was perfectly equipped and really great for getting away from it all .

A comfy cabin, but communication was not great. For example, I had to ask twice for the address and directions before our trip (with spotty internet, we wanted it on hand). Sue finally sent it, but said she typically only gives that info out the day before arrival. Once we got there, we had a few minor issues. The light was burned out in the bedroom. I emailed and Sue said she’d drop off a new bulb the next day, but she didn’t. We ended up swapping out a bulb from another room. There was about an inch of watered-down body wash in an old bottle in the shower -- I asked Sue if she had any more, and she said she planned on buying some the next day (which she did). It felt odd. Why not replace it before we got there? The kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans but had no staples, not even salt and pepper. There was a list of house rules but no info about resources or restaurants in town -- some local guidance would have been nice. Sue lives on the property, but we never met until we passed her in the driveway on our way out. Previous guests have described warm interactions with the hosts, but that was not our experience. It felt vaguely like we were an inconvenience and had come at a bad time. It’s a cozy place and the starry sky at night is lovely, but we were pretty much on our own.
