About this house rental

Colcello is a lovely old farmhouse just outside the peaceful village of San Leo Bastia on the border between Umbria and Tuscany. There are stunning views of the hills opposite. You have sole use of the gardens and are not overlooked by another property. A ten-minute walk takes you down to the village where you can sip a cappucino or campari in one of the two bars, buy fresh bread, pecorino and prosciutto for your lunch or enjoy a delicious pizza in the village restaurant. The hillsides ring with birdsong, butterflies flutter among the lavender and olive trees and in late spring and early summer, the gardens light up with fireflies! If you are looking to relax in beautiful surroundings, this is the place for you.
The accommodation is simple and rustic - this is not a glitzy modern villa! However, with a garden of your own and stunning views, we believe Colcello offers outstanding value - a perfect getaway for couples or small families. The accommodation consists of the upper half of a stonebuilt farmhouse. The lower half (owned by the same owner) is not rented out, so you enjoy complete peace and seclusion.
There are two bedrooms, both with beautiful views, mosquito frames over the windows and wooden shutters. The cosy kitchen/living room has oak beams and the original stone-tiled floor. It's furnished with a sofa and armchair plus dining table, chairs and shelves housing a small library of books. In the kitchen area there is a double sink, fridge-freezer, gas hob, electric oven and grill and cupboards containing all the necessary equipment and utensils. There's also an open fire for winter use. The bathroom has a bath with handheld shower, washbasin, lavatory and bidet.
Outside, there is a shady pergola, a thatched terrace with beautiful views over the hills and a table and chairs for alfresco eating. Steps lead down to the sun terrace.
The attractions of Cortona, Assisi, Citta di Castello, Perugia, Gubbio and Arezzo are all within an hour's drive. This is a great location for art lovers, walkers and those who just like to mosey around old hill towns and do some people-watching!
Colcello is on a hillside. The last stretch of the road is on an unsurfaced gravel road and the final bit is steep and narrow. There are steps both inside and outside. For this reason, we don't recommend it to families with very young children, adults with mobility problems or nervous drivers. It's best suited to a couple but also good for two couples or a family with children aged five and over.

We regret to say that we arrived and that - after looking around - we immediately turned around. The accommodation really did not meet our expectations, which were aroused by the beautiful photos. The road was almost impossible, even with our Volvo 4x4. We slid and skidded on the steep gravel road. When we arrived, it turned out that only a small attic part of the well-photographed, spacious looking, building belonged to the accommodation. The outdoor space was sparse: only the weeds had been mowed, but the leafy overgrown pergola from the photo was no longer there. All that was left was a sweltering plastic roof over the terrace. Where the swimming pool once stood was now a bare concrete slab. We were kind of shocked when we entered: a depressing, small, dark room, with a low ceiling. Compliments to the photographer: what a wide-angle lens and some moving furniture can't do. From the photos it looked like there was reasonable headroom, but my husband had to bend over the bed and could only have taken a shower while sitting in the bath tub. This was not clear at all from the photos. In addition, there was a moldy smell in the house. All in all, we got the feeling that we definitely didn't want to spend one night here, let alone a whole week. Yes, the view - standing on a small spot right next to the house - was beautiful, but that was all. We therefore cannot recommend this accommodation.

Colcello is a lovely original old house. It's located just above the village of San Leo Bastia, 1 km drive or 500 metres walk down into town. Quiet spot with beautiful views of the valley and surrounds, great place to relax.

A small but perfectly formed home from home. It was hard to leave!

Wonderful little house with a very nice view. We spent a great week. Kids enjoyed the swimming pool and the lovely cat they fell in love with. Lots of things to visit, among them Citta di Castello : not as famous as Sienne but very nice to visit and have a drink at the end of the day !

The house in a very quiet place offers a wonderful view of the village of San Leo Bastia. It is simple but fully equipped, even some food and cleaning supplies were available (which is not a given, as we learned from experience in several rented houses). Communication with Zita, the owner, was extremely friendly, also extensive information was provided on restaurants, stores and places of interest. The access road to the house is graveled and partly narrow and steep. We were glad to be on the road only with a relatively small car. Small is also the keyword for the house, which is relatively old and invites you with its lovely character to stay. However, the doors to the rooms are at most 165 - 170cm high, which meant that we regularly bumped our heads. We enjoyed the outdoor area under the arbor in the evening, and during the day the pool with a magnificent view. There were plenty of sun loungers available. The location of the house is perfect to explore Umbria, Perugia, Cortona and Lake Trasimeno are within 60 - 90 minutes by car. Tuscany with Arezzo or Montepulciano are also not far. In any case, we enjoyed the stay, even if it turned out shorter than planned due to illness.

Great remote location with pool
Great remote location with pool
We had a great stay, the host had provided us with very clear and concise instructions with local tips that were very useful and informative. The accommodation was perfect for what we wanted , which was a remote location with views and a peaceful setting. The property is basic (very charming and old) but very clean and has all the facilities you need to cook a decent meal and store food etc. We cooked meals with produce purchased from the local shop on four nights with no problem. There is also the option to eat in the local village. The pool was clean and well maintained with chairs, loungers to use. We have great memories of this place and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone else seeking a peaceful trip. There are also walking routes near by that we didn't check out but if we had more time we would have tried out. A lovely stay !

We had a nice and peaceful stay in your charming house on the mountaintop. The view and the surroundings are beautiful and we all enjoyed the lazy days at the pool and the cozy evenings under the pergola. The house is nice and well equipped. The house is located in beautiful surroundings and there are lots of possibilities to arrange nice trips to the nearest cities, by car. All four of us would like to reccomand your lovely house, and we would like to come back.
