Tiny GuestHouse Umekoji 梅小路

The Guesthouse is placed in very quiet and calm neighbourhood that allows to get to most places within minutes. Also main traveling hub is placed very close. The owner is very welcoming, warm and helpful. He is responsive to the requests and it can be clearly seen that he really care about guests and their wellbeing during visit in Kyoto. Helped me a lot with navigating through city and recommended a few lesser known spots and onsens that turned out to be great. The house itself is very lovely with a lot of amenities, interesting things in living room and accessible kitchen. You can even play a lot of oldie games on the unique console. Room itself was spacious and beds were comfortable. And of course I can't forget about cute cat Maru that was real manager there, that was showing up time to time with the owner and was bringing a lot of good energy. I enjoyed my stay in Kyoto greatly, thanks to that Guesthouse and I hope that I will have a chance to visit it again. Thank you for all the hospitality and pleasant stay!

Nothing! Everything was great!

The room is very beautiful it really gives you total traditional Japanese style. I can also testify the apartment is absolutely antisymmetric as we experienced an earthquake while we were there. Location is perfect.

The cat is often not home :(

The Guesthouse is located in a quiet neighbourhood, around 12min walk to Kyoto Station, and only ~5min to several different bus stops. The owner lives very nearby, and he is responsive to requests. Check in was easy and fast, and you are welcomed by the owner and his cat (as you can see in several photos included in the reviews). He can give you recommendations for restaurants, nearby public bath house, and also places to visit depending on your interest. If you can speak Japanese/Chinese and are a fan of KyoAni, then you will have a great time talking to the owner. The cat is also super friendly and lovely, he keeps purring when I pet him. Of course the cat does not live at the accommodation, so I was sad when I could not see him one last time since I had to leave early on check out day. I booked the Japanese style room with tatami, and the futon was super comfortable. My back felt grate after each sleep! I enjoyed my stay very much, and cannot wait to be back to Kyoto again.

Walking distance to Kyoto Station in quiet safe residential neighbourhood. Free laundry and rooftop terrace for drying clothes. Umekoji Park, Aquarium, combinis & restaurants close by. included toiletries & (limp) towel set. Comfy mattress and pillow.

This place is screaming for an update, a little TLC and serious deep cleaning. Squeaky floors, dust everywhere especially along floor walls and corners; heavy reliance on incense burning and air fresheners all day to mask odours. If you have respiratory issues or allergies to dust and strong chemical fragrance, this place may not be comfortable for you. Also, if you have heavy large suitcases, mobility and balance issues, or poor vision, the steep, narrow steps on awkward staircase pose a tripping hazard though hand rails are present. Even though quiet signs for after 10 pm are posted — If there are noisy boisterous boarders, you’ll be able to hear them across hallways or between floors. Something to consider if you’re counting on rest on the eve of a travel day.
