Cliburn Weigh Office is a compact luxury holiday cottage. Once a working part of the Eden Valley Railway line, the Weigh Office nestles at the bottom of Whinfell Forest, between the market towns of Penrith and Appleby, in the beautiful (but often forgotten) Eden Valley.
Located in beautiful countryside the Weigh Office provides the perfect base to totally relax and join with nature. With private parking, gravelled areas and decking overlooking (and having access to) a private 14 acre wood, this is a perfect get away to relax, enjoy, explore and stargaze.

I enjoyed staying at the Weigh Office, if your into Nature and wildlife you'll like it here, I loved the peace and tranquillity. A compact little house, clean and self sufficient. The hosts, a lovely couple, were at hand if needed . I would love to return.

We stayed for a very wet and stormy weekend but that did not interfere with a cosy warm stay. The cottage was well equipped and a bottle of wine on arrival was well recieved. The hosts were fab, left us to it but were close by if needed. We did weather out a storm on the last night but our hosts were great checking in on us and making sure we were comfortable. Overall a lovely weekend 😊

I came with my two dogs and it was great to have a forest near our house. It is perfect if you want to disconnect and have some peace. The bedroom was just a bit small, as my husband is tall it wasn't easy for him to sleep in the mezzanine. But overall, it is a cosy and cute place to stay, especially if you are a couple. Thanks for welcoming us with our two dogs, I really appreciate that !

Gavin is a brilliant host was helpful from the initial booking, welcomed us explained the essentials checked we liked the wine that was left, and let us get on with it felt like we were the only people there but was a comfort to know if you have any issues the owners are opposite The property is immaculate can’t fault it in anyway perfect location for exploring the lakes and surrounding villages Keep an eye out for the red squirrels too that’s quiet an amazing thing to see in it’s natural habitat Can’t praise this place enough absolutely perfect in every way

We enjoyed staying in the Railway Weigh Office at Cliburn very much. It looks small but is quite spacious and well-designed on the inside. It was quiet and peaceful. The hosts were excellent, and could not do enough to make our stay perfect. We hope to return next year.

A unique experience

Cliburn weigh house offers a unique holiday experience in a breathtaking area. The property is well equipped and is more than adequate as a base for holiday adventures. Situated very near to Penrith makes shopping and eating out easy with a car. The renting process was so easy and the owners are very approachable to answer any questions you may have. Would definitely recommend and hope to return soon.

The Weigh Office is beautifully appointed. The ideal spot for those exploring the Lake District, Eden Valley or The Pennines. My collie and I found nearby Whinfell Forest ideal for walks each end of the day and Larch Cottage, Melkinthorpe, 4 miles away, the perfect spot for lunch. Gavin and Wendy couldn't have been more obliging.

We had a wonderful few days staying in this quirky, cosy and comfortable accommodation. It was a brilliant base for exploring the Lake District and close the Penrith for supplies. We will definitely recommend it to friends and family, and come back again.

We had a lovely stay at the Weigh Office. Pros: Remote without being too remote (agree with other reviews stargazing comments!). Great walks nearby, red squirrel forest next door. Tourist spots within a short drive - Ullswater, Penrith etc. Very kind welcome package on arrival. Kitchen well equipped for cooking. Lovely compact accommodation done up to a good standard. Cons: The shower could benefit from a deep clean. Some of the kitchen utensils needed washing before we used them. The mezzanine bedroom was VERY low - we knew it would be a squeeze but we couldn't sit up in bed; it was much lower than we realised. We had a great time, the Weigh Office was brilliant overall and we got some much needed fresh air in a beautiful part of the country!

This place has been done up really nicely and you can tell the owners put a lot of effort into it. Owners were very accommodating and helped out with a couple of requests we had, as well as reccomending good places to go. We really enjoyed our stay here and will likely visit again!

Well-equipped, spotlessly clean and possibly the tiniest cottage we have ever stayed in, but so well designed it did not feel cramped. The ladder up and down to the bed in a sort of sleeping loft is not for the faint-hearted, but very comfortable when you got there.

The cottage was beautiful. It was in a lovely location, far enough away from everyone to feel rural and to be able to see a clear night sky but close enough to easily visit lots of places without travelling for too long. Gavin was amazing contacting us regarding provisions put in due to COVID and allowing us to keep our bikes in his barn. 100% will be coming back to stay!

We were so impressed with our stay at the Weigh Office. Gavin thoughtfully left the keys available and a welcoming light for us arriving in the dark. The cottage is well set up and well equipped, we loved the mezzanine bed. A perfect location for exploring the Lakes.

A beautiful little cottage in an area of natural beauty. The area is so peaceful and I would certainly recommend staying here as a place to escape and switch off. The hosts were brilliant. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, was spot on for us, and as described. It gave us the much needed relaxing getaway that we were looking for, and nothing disappointed! Perfect location, perfect facilities and perfect hosts. The Weigh house was immaculate on arrival, entry was easily obtained using prior information sent to us by email and the little welcome gift was greatly appreciated! Gavin and Wendy were outstanding hosts, friendly, approachable and more than helpful. The only bad thing we have to say, is that we're not still there! We will, however, be returning in the very near future!

A gorgeous little cottage, with excellent outdoor space and the surrounding countryside made for a special experience. The best thing however was the immense blackness of the sky at night with the brightest stars I've ever seen. Magical. Everything was clean and tidy inside, the bed was comfortable and cosy. Would thoroughly recommend this cottage and hope to be back at some point in the future.

We had a fantastic stay at the railway weight house perfect little cottage with lovely outside seating. Had everything we needed was clean and the owners were lovely leaving numbers and offered good advice. Would reccomend the place to others.

The communication with Gavin was flawless. It was a last minute booking and with emails and texts flying backwards and forwards was sorted in a couple of hours. The Office is set about 50m from the boundary of Whinfell Forest. Beautiful walks through the forest and plenty of local attractions within 10 ~ 25 mins driving distance. Gavin and Wendy live close by and are very welcoming without being intrusive. The Office has a small footprint but the renovation has been well thought out and the space maximized to its full potential. The kitchen has everything you need to cook your meals, the living area is compact but comfortable. Plenty of room in the toilet /shower. The mezzanine bedroom takes you back to being a child again, climbing ladders, crawling into bed etc but with the velux window plenty of light and a great view of the night sky. All the velux have blackout blinds but we opened the ones in the living area for more light. It's the small touches in the design that makes it easy to stay here. The lights in the bedroom can be accessed from the ladders and either side of the bed, also double sockets either side. There are ample sockets and everything required for a comfortable stay. Thank you Gavin and Wendy for allowing us to stay and we hope to return and try out the Signal box.

The Weigh Office provided a good central base for my holiday; everything I needed was provided. I thought my days of going up a ladder to bed were long gone, however, the mezzanine bedroom area is very cosy. A great conversion and I would certainly look to return when visiting the area again.

Lovely quiet, peaceful location. The weigh office is a small but perfectly formed holiday let for a couple. It had everything we needed, a well-equipped kitchen, bottle of wine very kindly provided, and the owners were really helpful, letting us store a bike securely in the barn. A really lovely property in a beautiful setting, we hope to return.

My second stay at the Weigh Office and it was every bit as good as before. It is a stand-alone building in a very peaceful position with its own parking right next to the front door. Inside it is compact but with everything one could need. The place is newly refurbished and pristine. And, the situation is perfect - at the gateway to the Lakes and wooded walks on the doorstep. Great value for money. Indeed, for the price, couldn't be better.

Owner very welcoming, very friendly. On arrival we had a bottle of wine and biscuits which we appreciate very much. The little house as many people on reviews have said... it is definitely a very special place, uniquely well built, a place who made our wedding anniversary more special. Had a lovely stay at cliburn weigh office, small issue on arrival but resolved quickly. Gavin and Wendy are very accomodating. Great very peaceful location, not too far from the Lake District. Had everything we needed, with lots of little extras that made for a very comfortable stay (bbq with charcoal, bottle of wine etc). Thank you :)
