The location was excellent, just a short walk to the attractions like Ishidan gai aka Stone Stairs and the Kajika Bridge. We had 2 rooms, ours was a double room and my daughter and son in law in a regular room on the upper floor with gorgeous view of the alps. The larger room has a very large attached open-air onsen, the other room has a smaller round enclosed onsen. Staff were friendly, when we drove up to the ryokan we were greeted by staff and parked the car for us. Both breakfast and dinner were excellent, we were given the chopsticks we chose at the beginning of the trip to keep as souvenir which was a very nice gesture.

Upon arrival we were seated in the lobby to check in which is quite typical of ryokan. The sofa in the lobby was a bit dated and could use some updating. During check-in I had a list of my daughter's food allergens written on paper in Japanese and asked the check-in staff to address this to the kitchen staff. The answer he gave me was that he was only able to address the 'peanut' but nothing else. The attitude I got was that he wasn't willing to try, which I find odd considered Japan is known for their hospitality. Most meals were fine except one tofu dish, my daughter had a really bad reaction which she hadn't had for a long time. I asked the server and she insisted that it was just tofu. But even the appearance tells me that the tofu was mixed with something and 're-formed' into a tofu shape. The server didn't try to investigate and seemed not knowledgeable in food ingredients. Through-out my travel in Japan in the past and the remaining of the trip, even a soba shop will go out of their way to address the allergens. This is the only disappointing part of our stay and hope they can take this more seriously in the future as some allergens like peanut is life-threatening.

Exceeded my expectations. The views from the room and the rooftop onsen were gorgeous, the meals were consistently great, the location was a great point from which to explore the town, and the staff were, without exception, friendly and attentive.

The staff were so friendly and took really good care of us. The food was delicious and plentiful! We really enjoyed the outdoor bath and the view of the mountains. Would definitely recommend staying here!
