Cateran Rest

The cabin is lovely, comfortable, and beautifully presented. The hot tub was a fantastic bonus and made our stay even more enjoyable. The scenic views are stunning, and the location close to the village is very convenient for picking up anything you need or exploring local products. Andrew is an amazing host, very helpful and welcoming, and provided us with clear instructions about the log cabin. We had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend it!

One small suggestion would be to provide a mop and bucket for cleaning the floors, especially in case of any accidental spills.

Location, quiet surroundings

We really enjoyed our stay at Cateran Rest in Kirkmichael. The lodge is in a beautiful, peaceful setting and it was lovely to have some time away and enjoy the surrounding area.

Unfortunately, there were a few things that let our stay down. We were disappointed that we weren’t able to use the wood-burning stove, especially as this was advertised as one of the features of the lodge and was something we were really looking forward to. We also felt that the cleanliness could have been better. The lodge itself wasn’t as clean as we expected, and in particular, the hot tub didn’t appear to have been cleaned to a satisfactory standard. Given the cost of a stay, we would have expected a higher level of cleanliness. One other thing we would definitely warn future guests about is the road leading up to the lodge. It has a lot of potholes and is quite rough in places, so we would strongly recommend using a higher-clearance vehicle rather than a low car.

The cabin itself is big, very spacious and beautiful, modern and spotlessly clean inside. It's very remote so quiet and peaceful. The hot tub was hot and had a menthol or eucalyptus smell which was lovely. The kitchen was well equipped with appliances and the modern bathroom had a lovely rainfall shower with hot water. Livingroom had 2 couches and a TV plus a fire.

The narrow farm road to access the cabin is about a mile long and was terrible with huge potholes, we had an SUV but that even struggled at times. Once at the cabin, there is literally nowhere to go other than back the same farm road, so although it's dog friendly, we couldn't even go for a walk, we would have had to drive back that road and find somewhere else to walk. Outside the cabin was filthy and covered in cobwebs and it was badly overgrown with weeds and nettles surrounding it. The hot tub was a bit dirty inside with quite a bit of scum gathering when it was on, we only lasted an hour as there were a lot of flies, due to the overgrowth. The beds were not very comfortable and the single bed frames made a racket everytime you moved, so we never got much sleep. It was also quite chilly inside even though it was 18-20°c outside. Unfortunately day two, it decided to rain non stop, and as there is no cover over the hottub, we couldn't use it, so by lunchtime, we decided to pack up and head home early. Didn't see much point sitting about the cabin and we weren't wanting to tackle that access road out to drive somewhere and have to come back, to spend a second night in those uncomfortable beds. Such a shame as we were badly needing a break and it ended up being an expensive, uncomfortable 1 night stay.
