The pictures were taken over several days in the kitchen, while all food was stored safely in the fridge. Initially, the host sent us a few traps, but they proved ineffective. Having cockroaches everywhere means you’re forced to sleep with the lights on unless you can live with additional guests in bed, not just in the kitchen and bathrooms. This isn’t just about insects; it’s also about hygiene and well-being (feel free to google). The problem likely isn’t new either, as there are dead cockroaches in the lamps and other places. Two days before our departure, the host organised a fumigation service. However, we declined due to health concerns about using strong insecticides while we’re staying there, especially with children. This could easily have been done anytime, when no one is staying in the unit. Beyond the cockroach problem, the unit is poorly maintained: There’s old and probably used furniture and various small things that aren’t working, like the leaking dishwasher and rusty fixtures. The house itself is beautiful, it’s mostly due to poor maintenance. When we moved out, the host “accidentally” attempted to overcharge us for pool usage. We suggested to stick to the agreed-upon rate of €30 extra per day. Actually, we would have expected a discount given the nightly cockroach party in the house! In the end, we also seemed to have a different understanding about when the security deposit of €500 was due for payback; On our departure, the host said “tomorrow” but didn’t follow through. Later, she said it would typically take a week.
