Everything was fine

We really enjoyed our stay at Mirasol Guesthouse. The location was excellent - very convenient for walking around Funchal, especially the old town, the seafront, restaurants and nearby sights. The guesthouse itself has a very nice local character: it is simple, but charming, with an authentic Portuguese atmosphere rather than a standard modern hotel feeling. The room was not very big, but it was cozy, clean and comfortable enough for our stay. We actually liked this traditional style, as it made the place feel more personal and local. The staff were friendly and helpful, and overall everything was easy and pleasant from check-in to check-out.

There was nothing serious that we disliked. The room was a little small, so for someone travelling with a lot of luggage it might feel a bit tight, but for us it was completely fine. The building is also quite traditional, so you should not expect a very modern hotel style, but this was part of the charm for us. One small practical point is about parking. The parking option suggested by the property was not the most convenient for us, and we found the Amazonia car park much easier and more practical to use. Apart from that, everything was good and we had a very nice stay.

The property is beautiful, with charming French-inspired architecture and aesthetics. It was very clean, and the housekeeping staff did a fantastic job throughout my stay. The breakfast was excellent and offered a great selection. However, if you only want a coffee from the espresso machine, you still have to pay the full €10 breakfast fee, which felt disappointing.

One thing to be aware of is that many of the amenities come with an additional charge. Laundry service is available for €10 per load, which I felt was a reasonable price. However, guests are not permitted to use the washer and dryer themselves. There are security cameras throughout the common areas and hallways, so if security is important to you, you’ll likely appreciate that. Personally, I did feel like I was being watched much of the time. As a solo female traveler with a private bedroom and bathroom, I had a last-minute overnight guest. The guesthouse informed me that this was disrespectful and compromised the safety of the property. I understand that policies are often created because of previous experiences, and I respect a property’s right to enforce its rules. The person I invited was kind, respectful, and someone I would never bring into a space if I believed they posed any risk. Unfortunately, it seems that a few bad experiences with others have resulted in stricter policies for everyone. I was also charged an additional $50 for my overnight guest. Overall, I probably wouldn’t stay here again. If the cooler water temperature is simply a house policy to reduce the risk of burns, I completely respect that. My only concern is that it was presented as a legal requirement. During my travels, every other place I stayed offered plenty of hot water for both showers and baths, so that explanation didn’t align with my experience. Despite my concerns, the staff were genuinely wonderful—kind, welcoming, and helpful throughout my stay.
