About this house rental

This comfortable, spacious and much-loved family home in Birnam & Dunkeld ('Best Place to Live in Scotland' - The Times, March 2023) is a perfect base for exploring Highland Perthshire and further afield. It has four bedrooms, a generous kitchen and dining room, a cosy sitting room with wood stove and a large garden – ideal for two families or gatherings of friends. It’s also a house of books and music with well-stocked bookshelves for all ages, a piano and other instruments for you to enjoy.

THE VILLAGE For such a small community, Birnam & Dunkeld has incredible amenities. Birnam has a shop, post office/café, a pub and Birnam Arts, a full-blown community arts centre with its own café - all within a five-minute walk of the house. Take a 15-minute stroll across the bridge, and Dunkeld has great little shops and galleries, cafés, restaurants and live music pubs. Close behind the house, the majestic oak of Shakespeare’s Birnam Wood stands on the banks of the River Tay, where you may easily see a red squirrel or even a beaver! Across the river you can enjoy the tranquil grounds of Dunkeld's ancient cathedral.

THE AREA Together, Birnam & Dunkeld are a favourite Scottish holiday destination. Castles, distilleries, outdoor activities of all kinds, and the spectacular landscape and history of Highland Perthshire are right on the doorstep. Walk out of the house and lose yourself up the river or in the surrounding woods and hills. Drive for half an hour and you’re deep into the mountains, glens and lochs of the Highlands. Yet city life is within easy reach, both by rail (the station’s only a 7-minute walk from the house) by car (we're just off the A9 - an hour to Edinburgh, just over an hour to Glasgow) and by bus.

ACTIVITIES Easily accessible activities include golf, tennis, fishing, swimming, pony-trekking and riding, bird-watching (we have a resident osprey at the Loch of the Lowes), mountain-biking (Dunkeld is famous for its superb trails), hillwalking, climbing, canoeing, kayaking, canyoning. Most of these are more or less on the doorstep, for others it's a drive of no more than half an hour.

If you're traveling from the US and take an overnight flight, be aware that there is a late check-in - 4pm - for this property. If you arrive in the morning, you'll need to find something to do or another place to stay until then . . .That being said, this is a spacious vintage home filled with eclectic decor and fun artwork in close proximity to Dunkeld, a fun little town with a pub, fish n' chips, a drugstore and small supermarket, and a few clothing and art/craft shops. The house has a well-stocked kitchen, two large bathrooms upstairs (but also a musty powder room on the main floor), and four large bedrooms, all with antique oak and other wood furniture and ample storage for your clothes. There are two large sitting rooms, one with a piano (unfortunately, out of tune when we arrived) and a guitar. The enclosed garden in back has places to sit and relax, and also a picnic table, and the landscaping is lovely. Everything was clean, and lots of towels were provided. The house is on a road, but we never heard traffic, only birdsong. Something to take into consideration: there is a steep, winding staircase that I had to carefully navigate (I'm an older person with balance problems).

The house was a delightful place to stay! The beds, rooms, outdoor space, as beautiful as it is comfortable. We were a family of eight and the space was big enough for all. Communication with Sarah and Jamie was quick and friendly. Birnam and Dunkeld were fabulous. Shops and restaurants enough for us, and the lovely river walk. The first of us to arrive was a bit confused by the address being a name instead of a number- but we figured it out and checking in was easy. The house is full of wonderful art, and fabulous books. It has a very well equipped kitchen. We could have happily stayed much longer.

What a great stay! Walking through the house, we just kept saying “wow!” Beautiful, spacious, clean home with character, great showers, comfortable beds, lovely back yard/patio, gracious and welcoming hosts, plenty to do in walking/short drive distances. Our three kids (6, 4, and 4) loved the kids room and allllll the books on the shelves, along with the charming Beatrix Potter Experience at the Arts Center just down the street and the sand pit at the playground across the river in Dunkeld. We took longer outings to Pitlochry (saw a show at the festival theatre), Aberdeen, St. Andrew’s, and meant to go to Perth, but also enjoyed the bakeries, parks, and walks closer to Birnam and Dunkeld.
