This was the best stay I’ve had at a Japanese ryokan in 10+ years traveling around Japan, and was an even better value. The clearly recent renovations were lovely, especially to our room, which had thoughtful details everywhere—we loved the mini fridge, alcohol spray, and plum kombucha tea. The staff was wonderfully accommodating, promptly delivering extra pillows to our room upon request (believe it or not, many traditional Japanese hotels would refuse). The included Japanese breakfast was satisfying and the coffee machine delivered a fine cup. Norikura Kogen was green and charming in summer and a perfect place for local hikes within walking distance of the hotel, as well as a bus up to Tatamidaira for Kengamine and other peaks. I plan to return next summer, if not before.

We stayed in komakusa for 1 night. The staff were very friendly and helpful and could speak good English. We felt at home while staying here. There are quite a few attractions which you can explore nearby, so the location is good. Breakfast is basic, hotspring within the hotel is a little too small but rich in minerals, and the futon mattress is too thin to sleep on.
