Key Hostel Serdika

It was one of the most positive-energy places I've ever been. The people I shared the dorm for several days were friendly and unique. There's a certain geometry and vibe to the place that contributes to establishing a connection between the travelers: from big shared hallway and rest/eating zones to the absence of individual bed curtains. There's a kitchen with fridge and shelves for storage. It's equipped with some okay appliances. There's an oven, stove, microwave, water filter, and electric kettle. The location is brilliant, near the metro, a big store, and right in the city center. Some drunks wandering around at night, tho. Good spacious storage space in the room (beneath the bed). Good mattresses and pillows.

The hostel lacks maintenance: pulled out outlets, dirty corners, no mosquito nets (one night there were so many of them that nobody in the room couldn't get a normal sleep) The beds in my room (double deckers) were made of wood, which certainly feels natural and great, but because of design flaws, it squeaks so much when someone ascends or descends from the second floor. Some of the furniture needs renovation. Also, there was one moment in my stay when I was sitting in my room, and an administrator came in with a disinfection worker and started spraying some aerosol all over the room. No warnings or instructions have been given, but since I know how harmful it can be, I left the room for a couple of hours. Oh, and there are some cockroaches. But since the disinfection is quite often, in my 4-5 days stay, I only saw 2 of them, half-dead And after all the downsides, it's still a good place I'd come back to.

Really nice place, rooms are small but pretty good for this price. The localization is perfect and rooms are on the first floor if you choose the private ones and pay for the whole room.

Not so good organisation with checking in, there is almost never someone at the reception but it is possible to check in online so it is ok

The mattress was comfortable and the dorm rooms wer secured with password locks.

The hostel is not easy to spot since it is just marked with a very small sign that almost blends in with the wall of the building. The common rooms just consist of some seemingly randomly collected sofas and armchairs, which did not seem inviting to me to hang out. The door to some of the toilet rooms was taped to stay open and one of the shower rooms did not even have a door (I don't know about the ones on the other side of the floor but heard nothing good either). The common showers in the doorless room just had shower curtains, so anyone could have theoretically just come in a pull the curtain aside. Also, to get into the tiny kitchen, you had to go through said shower room (but at least that kitchen had a door you could close. The kitchen was tiny for the number of people this hostel is capable of hosting and it did not seem clean whenever I was in there. As for the dorm room, it is not anyone's fault, but there were dozens of flies in my room when I entered since they kept the windows open until my arrival for getting some fresh air in. So perhaps some gauze/mesh would be advisable.
