    Called to check it was ok to check in late. Was told it was fine so booked. Little did I know that I was talking to a call centre, not someone at the hotel. The check in instructions were a truncated text referring to the location discoverable on a map. It took several phone calls before I could prise out of the most unhelpful person in the world the door code for the hotel code. It was as if the person was being deliberately obstructive (she was). I had to double down on her and prise each piece of information out of her with her wilful resistance every step of the way. The owner who has the business for sale is clearly trying to run it into the ground, which seems quite mystifying as the building is quite iconic (or was before being deliberately neglected). I actually had to call the estate agents who are selling the business to check it was still trading as the call centre were so pig obstructive they would lead anyone to believe the hotel was not trading. Be aware the lift doesn't work, after, according to everyone I met, an 83 year old fell down the lift shaft. I am 63 and have travelled a lot including in the less developed world, eg Benin in West Africa, and I can state without reservation or doubt this is by far and away the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. Sleep rough for a better experience.

    This hotel is closed, zero staff no reception . You get an email the day before arriving with a doer code to let yourself in the building, and another code for a lock box in a corridor next to your room. Wtaf?! It’s not some “modern” way of doing it . This hotel is closed and rents about 8 rooms out like this . Me, my wife and my 80 year old mother dod see two random handymen or similar refitting some light fitting but theirs is zero staff. Not at reception etc. when we left we’d to put the room key back in the lock box , go to the front door , and make sure it’s closed when we left . Ps, the owner is trying to sell it but the council won’t let him. When he does sell, you’ll not even get in like we did. Avoid !

    Rude scruffy staff, seems to have very poor management, very sad because Stromness really needs a good mid-range hotel.
