    The seaweed makes it rough if you are a beach person. Trollies don’t come often enough. Family disappointed by shows. Staff are lovely. Would not return. You will enjoy if expectations are reasonable. Would be better if they had beach tacos. Beach restaurant needs fans. They also need to start relocating coaties. They are too much. Walk main path late afternoon to see monkeys. Super cute.

    We booked Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda for a special family holiday to celebrate my 50th and my dad's 80th. We had a party of 8 people which seemed to be an inconvenience for the staff from the start! Check-in was a long and slow process in the blistering heat after a long journey. There was no welcome or even a drink of water whilst we waited. Once we eventually checked in the buggy was made available to take us to our rooms. My elderly parents with mobility issues were told to get in and out of the buggy multiple times and to stand on the side and wai with no shade. Whilst that was happening with our parents our luggage was left to one side whilst smaller parties continued to be taken to their rooms. I heard the bell boy say multiple times 'oh its a big party and many peices of luggage' - I had to interject after waiting patiently to say if it was 2 families it would be exactly the same so they needed to stop ignoring us and treating us like we were a problem! Only then did we get any movement. It was a very dissapointing start to the holiday. The rooms weren't great as locks broken on external doors, air conditioning not working and we had to move my parents but this wasn't possible until the following day, again that was an inconvenience for the staff. The rooms and facilities were basic and definitely not 5 star. We didnt get a 5 star service as the staff were not particularly attentive to their guests so not luxurious accomodation, foid was ok but the same most days and not the exceptional service you would expect for a 5 star hotel. All in all it was very basic and not the special holiday we were expecting.

    We booked this as a five star resort through Agoda. We were very misled. The hotel is very run down and in need of repairs. There is visible black mold all over the room and we are starting to get sick. We have not yet had this issue (thankfully) but several other groups we have talked to have found cockroaches in their rooms and have been having a hard time getting room changes. Concierge and customer service do not answer the phone, and most employees can’t really answer any questions about activities, etc. The beach is pretty but there are only about 10 chairs for tue entire resort. Restaurants are over filled and people are moved through like cattle. I do not recommend this hotel.

    BlueBay Grand Esmeralda feels like a resort that may once have deserved its impressive reputation, but sadly, based on my stay, those days appear to be long gone. The biggest problem is the enormous difference between the five-star luxury experience being advertised and what I actually experienced. The resort feels tired, dated and desperately in need of major renovation and investment. For me, the overall standard was closer to a budget two-star experience. One particularly noticeable aspect of my stay was the dramatic change at weekends. Large numbers of guests appeared to arrive by coach on heavily discounted local packages, seemingly filling otherwise empty rooms and dramatically increasing the occupancy of the resort. The atmosphere and pressure on the facilities changed almost overnight. There is absolutely nothing wrong with offering affordable packages to the local Mexican market. However, when a resort is simultaneously marketing itself internationally as a five-star luxury destination, this apparent reliance on high-volume, discounted weekend business further highlights the disconnect between the glossy marketing and the experience actually being delivered. There are positives. Many of the restaurant, bar and maintenance staff were friendly, hardworking and welcoming. Unfortunately, front-of-house appeared overwhelmed dealing with complaints and disappointed guests. Holiday time is precious. When you're promised five-star luxury but experience something considerably below that standard, it's incredibly disappointing. Would I recommend BlueBay Grand Esmeralda to family or friends? No. There are far better resorts around Playa del Carmen offering a superior experience at a similar price point. The resort desperately needs renovation, modernisation and a serious rethink of both the experience and expectations it is selling to its guests. Overall rating: 2/10 – extremely disappointing and one of my poorest hotel experiences in Mexico.
