Location good, middle of Tarbert
Dark passage to get to front door was tricky

There was nothing I liked about staying at the nest!
I received the keys from the key safe located outside the property. As soon as I stepped inside the property it was frozen and there was a really strong smell of damp. I upgraded the room as it stated it had been sound proofed. Which it certainly had not been! We barely slept as you could hear traffic from the busy road outside and people talking as they walked past. The blinds and curtains are short of the windows so the light from the street light directly outside shines through. I put the electric heater on in the room when I arrived but it did not work. So I found the central heating thermostat in the hallway and put the heating on for an hour, to which the host messaged me asking me not to put the heating on stating the heating was set at 24 degrees Celsius. That most certainly was not the case because the place was frozen. I would not recommend staying here and it certainly is not value for money!

The room needs a bin. The kitchen needs a "staff only" sign on the door.

The room itself was ok although the sink in the en-suite was tiny. Our main issue was the road noise which began early in the morning. Even though this is a small seaside town the property - or at least the room we were in - faces directly onto the main road. It’s also the main route to Lochgilphead and Campbeltown so quite busy. The owner did warn us that it could be noisy despite its triple glazed window.
The noise from the road nearby

This cute corner room in Tarbert is an affordable gem. Our stay in the deluxe room had everything we needed: a comfortable bed, a shower with truly amazing water pressure, fast WIFI, and a great host. While a couple things could be improved, they were small and did not affect our basic use of the amenities. One amazing perk was our room's windows--they overlook the harbor and Tarbert Castle!
The location is also incredibly convenient, located around the corner from a supermarket that is open until 22:00 and down the street from several delicious restaurants. As of August 2025, Tarbert has free parking, and there were plentiful spots to park very close by. The guest house is located above the main street, but the sound-proof windows work incredibly well when closed all the way. The Rest is a 3-minute walk to a delicious restaurant with fresh seafood, a 10-minute walk to the castle grounds with hiking opportunities, and a 20-minute drive from the ferry to Arran.
The host: Shamsul is super communicative and friendly, responding within minutes to messages and even stopping by the guest house personally. We arrived earlier than estimated, and he was so lovely to allow us to check in early. In addition to leaving water and tea for us, Shamsul went out of his way to gift us Scottish cookies, and gave us copious tips and recommendations about the town and region. He is a truly kind and caring person, and was the highlight of our stay--he even offered to bring us petrol should we run out!
Overall, our stay in Tarbert at the Rest was exactly what we needed. Thank you!!

I had booked this room at very short notice as my ferry booking was sub just to disruption or cancellation. I was pleased to get a room in Tarbert to give me somewhere to stay when my ferry was cancelled. The room provided what I needed which was a clean room with en-suite in a location close to the ferry port. The room has everything I needed for an overnight stay. Communication with the owner was excellent and he gave me the info I needed for a late arrival. Instructions were clear and accurate.
The room was good value for money. Info on where to find a place to park would be helpful in advance.

Just wanted a place to sleep and this property fitted the bill perfectly.
Access to the property was through a dark unlit passage, but a light did come on at the entrance.

A lovely room, plenty of space to move around, communication with owner was good.
It made a lovely change having the key lock number before hand, so many places wait until the last minute.

location was excellent. Proprietor very amenable and helpful, the key was not where it was supposed to be when we arrived but he came very quickly to let us is and check everything was OK. It was clean, neat and comfrotable. Everything worked well.
A bedside table on both sides of the bed would be good if there was space. also more table room for kettle etc, but in a small roonm this is not always possible.

It was a little lower standard to what we are accustomed to but there was no other accommodation available

Very spacious room with everything you need.
Comfy bed and lovely view of the harbour. Great value for money.

Convenient for the centre of Tarbert with nearby on street parking.
Very small...but probably in line with the price paid at the end of the day. Rather scruffy initial impressions with approach being round the back of the property then up concrete steps which entails passing the bins and the local Co-op store unloading area. Bathroom with its excellent shower and acceptable loo seriously let down by its ludicrously tiny handbasin - a veritable masterpiece of miniaturisation - which renders impossible any attempt at having a wash without completely covering the floor with water.

Big spacious room. Nice decor.
The entrance is shocking. Filthy dirty stairs. Door very difficult to unlock. Bins over flowing with old food, booze cans and cigarette buts

In the centre of Tarbert. TV in room too.
Because of its proximity to the Co Op we had a couple of deliveries through the night which were really loud. Other occupants left at 0600 and had problems locking the door so kept slamming it and rattling the key in the lock. Did not get a good night’s sleep but It was not expensive. Suggest ear plugs if anyone stays.

Felt like window not sealed so hear more of road noise

The room and en-suite were fresh and nicely dressed. There were 2 of us but only one bedside table and bedside light, and one chair, so would suit a single person well. We were there overnight, and for less than 12 hours, so it didn't really matter to us that the dining/kitchen areas were not fully ready to receive guests, and didn't feel welcoming. The host responded immediately to a request for help when the TV would not switch on.

Very comfortable and spacious bedroom. Large bathroom with amazing shower. A great location for Kennacraig ferry terminal. Bedroom areas and bathroom very clean. Lovely plush carpet.
Unusual set up for coffees etc outside of the bedroom, with no place to wash dishes. Table in dining area appears broken and fridge/freezer needs a good clean. Whilst it is a great location for the ferry, it's very noisy as is right on the main road and traffic runs past all night. Could do with some lighting along pathway in winter.

Clean room.
Room looked onto the local Co-op delivery area, noise from early morning. Also the rooms panel heater didn’t work and the other radiator temperature was controlled from a central ‘Nest’ thermostat in the communal hall.

We stayed at the rest for one night as a stop gap to take the ferry to Jura, it was exactly what we needed, perfect central location close to the co-op and center of the town of tarbet. It was actually a really nice stay, the bed was super comfy, a large room with a nice ensuite toilet/shower, the decor was really nice and just what we needed for one night, the TV had netflix which is a necessity haha and the wifi worked great. There was also a dining room of the main hallway that we used to eat dinner and prepare some food, there is just a microwave not a hob or gas cooker so plan accordingly for that, but the co-op provides some great scottish microwave meals that filled a hole.
overall a really pleasant stay and would recommend anyone to stay here.
The only issue was finding it at first, it is signposted and actually really is easy but as always with any place you first visit it can be confusing, so if you are arriving by the coach then its practically a minute from there, when you get of the coach take the first left onto the main road, there is this small sweet community garden area on your left and the accomodation is just past the house directly after the garden, it is down a short alleyway that actually backs out onto the back of the co-op store, so it is really easy to locate, i will not mark down for this because the accommodation is great, maybe a little notice or image of how to find it can be provided by the host but please don't let this change your mind on booking the accommodation as i highly recommend it.

Lovely large room with a very comfy double bed. Very clean.
Would have liked a table and chair in the room plus kettle and tea making facilities in the room rather than having to go to the next room to make a hot drink
