Berghotel Gasterntal

I was hiking the Bernese Oberland Traverse and the natural stay was Kandersteg however, due to very high prices there, I chose the Berghotel at Gasternal, which is about 13km further on by road or 9km by trail. The valley is quite remote hence is extremely quiet. The setting a quite beautiful. Within five minutes walk are a swing bridge and a lama farm. There are towering mountain peaks around the hotel which are quite something in the sunset. There is a very pretty garden to chill in. The hotel is ''Swiss mountain rustic". Bathrooms are shared but spotless. A buffet breakfast was included and very hearty.

The road in is one way with a tunnel in one part. Guests are encouraged to use the private bus service. However, the timetable next to the hotel bus stop is incorrect. The advice given by the hotel staff, ''not needing to book for the first bus of the day'', was incorrect. You NEED to call the company and reserve a place on a bus in and out. I had a Swiss E SIM card with data only. Not being able to call the bus company caused some anxiety. If you stay here, please take my advice and ensure you have reservations both in and out.

Very nice property and even nicer staff

Bad information given to us via email after booking regarding the bus you need to get there. Do not listen to this as it could leave you stranded. You need to make a reservation for the bus- and the woman answering the phone for the booking couldn’t speak great English because we tried to book for the following day and that wasn’t registered. And the bus timetable they provided was out of date- the first and last bus on the timetable no longer run. Though the staff from the hotel insisted they did and that we didn’t need to book, we trusted their advice. The staff from the neighbouring hotel informed us that this is a long standing issue that she has raised and complained about numerous times. By the time we realised all of this on the morning we were departing there was no bus with space available until 11am. If you are depending on the first or last bus please be aware that there is the possibility that you may miss this and be stranded. Our following days plans were almost ruined and only saved by the generosity of a local who picked us up on the 9KM walk back into the town after we were left stranded.
