Couch Potato Hostel is a wonderful blend of history and youthfulness. The building itself is over 100 years old, full of character, tradition, and the charm of old Matsumoto. Yet the atmosphere inside feels incredibly young, friendly, and open. Both the staff and the guests are genuinely open-minded, and people naturally gather in the common area to chat, share stories, and connect. It’s the environment created by Couch Potato that makes this possible.
I stayed in the four-bed mixed dorm, and the bunk was surprisingly spacious, with plenty of room beside the bed to keep my belongings. The futon and bedding were very comfortable, and I appreciated being able to borrow a free padlock to store my valuables safely.
Their recommendations for things to do in Matsumoto and around the area were spot-on. I tried several of the restaurants they suggested, and all of them were great.
I only stayed for two nights this time, but when I come back to Matsumoto, I’ll definitely stay at Couch Potato Hostel again.

This was one of the best hostels I stayed at in Japan! Stayed in a dorm. Bunks are spacious. All the facilities are really good. Laid back atmosphere, perfect for socialising.
